Imagine if we could defend! 09:26 - Oct 1 with 8943 views | Wallingford_Boy | How good we’d be! Obviously we’ve paid big cash for Tuanzebe to not just sit on the bench, but who does he replace? Burgess for me. Williams in for Clarke too.

Imagine if we could defend! on 07:56 - Oct 2 by jayessess | Difficult stat to interpret this one, I think? It's post-shot expected goals, so is as much a reflection of the quality of opposition shooting as the quality of opposition chances. Our xGA is lower (10.8) and roughly reflected in our actual goals conceded (11). Opponents are getting better shots in than you would expect for the type and quantity of chances we're conceding, but Hladky's excellent shot stopping has meant that hasn't really hurt us. (Of course, there might be something unmeasurable we're doing that allows opposition forwards to get in better shots than you'd expect them to) |
Good post and conclusion. The discrepancy exists and that stat is more indicative of how much Hladky has excelled this season. As you say, hard to speculate re the bracketed sentence. Hands up, I wanted to celebrate his performance again and my text afterwards is informed more by what I've seen than the attached table. We've looked top 6 candidates rather than top 2 candidates so far IMO, but that could mean I'm overdue an eye test.

Doesn't "post-shot expected goals" have an element of whether the keeper is saving the shot away from danger or back into danger? Of course, that can be connected to the quality of the shot but can also be connected to the goalkeeping. I have no doubt that Hladky has made some excellent saves so the quality of shot argument certainly stands to a large extent.

As I understand it, PsXG (post-shot expected goals) is the same as xGOT (expected goals on target) and just measures where in the goal the attacker placed their shot and the likelihood that the keeper saves a shot hit into that area. So it directly looks at the proficiency of your finishing and only indirectly at the quality of your chance creation. Josh Koroma's effort from long distance on Saturday was 0.01 xG (it was from very far out), but was 0.17 xGOT (he got it on target and relatively near the corner). Both Huddersfield and Blackburn generated more xGOT than xG against us, Huddersfield 1.61 worth of shots on target from 1.26 worth of shooting chances and Blackburn 2.26 worth of shots on target from 0.92 worth of shooting chances.
