It’s the timing.
We all support Ukraine against the butchery of Putin’s invasion. We’ve all at some time put up the “I Stand With Ukraine “ memes and had a Ukrainian flags as avatars.
Now imagine that tomorrow, Zelensky sends in special ops across the Russian border. They murder nearly 300 innocent Russians at a rock concert. Then go door to door murdering women and children. Gang rapping women and uploading the scenes to the relatives and friends of the victims on Facebook.
Anyone in here going to put up and “I Stand With Ukraine” meme or have a Ukrainian flag as an avatar just 24 hours later? |
Yes it's horrific!
But the fact would still remain that Putin has bombed hospitals, schools, civilian homes etc, and whilst you would never agree with it, hes not only started it, he's taken something that's not his.
Maybe when Zelensky has gone, a leader might come in with retribution as his aim.
It's not right, but you know why it's happened. |  |

But, with that understanding in place, I think people would find it very uncomfortable seeing "Free Ukraine" being posted if something akin to what happened in Israel occured in Russia. |  |

Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. When Hamas took control Israel immediately closed its border for obvious reason. Egypt did the same because of Iran’s influence over Hamas.
Although I suppose it does beg the question that as a strong supporter of freedom for Palestine, why doesn’t Morsy refuse to play for the Egyptian national team whilst its government continues to impose a blockade on Gaza. [Post edited 9 Oct 2023 12:56]

I would never go so far as to say that Morsy should refuse to play for Egypt, but it would be most interesting to know what he thinks of the Egyptian state's blockade.
In any event, the blockade has been overtaken in importance by events. Dreadful, bloody events. And I fear that the latest chapter of bloodshed is tragically only just beginning.
It is often dangerous to compare any international relationship with any other, but this should serve as a reminder of how peace in relation to the Irish question was so dearly won, and how foolish we would be (have been) ever to put it at risk again. |  | | |
