New York accommodation advice wanted. 16:35 - Oct 10 with 4646 viewssoupytwist

Planning a wedding anniversary trip to New York around this time next year.
Historically, there's been loads of New York travel-related advice on here but most of it pre-dates the pandemic and the city's recent crackdown on unlicensed AirBnB rentals.
Does anyone have any post-pandemic advice on which parts of New York to stay in for a first timer and recommendations for hotels/accommodation rentals please?
We'd like to do most of the usual things - Central Park, Ellis Island, MoMA, go up a tall building etc. and there will be just the two of us.
Thanks

Anywhere around the Mid town area will give you most options both hotel wise and things to see.

If you’re looking for a reasonable priced ok hotel chain look up Club Quarters, they have a number of hotels around time square and central station areas. I use them frequently pre Covid when travelling for work.

Also be mindful when setting expectations of the hotel that real estate in Manhattan is expensive so a lot of hotel rooms are very small and don’t compare well in the size of room to cost ratios. Guess it all depends if you intend to spend any real time at the hotel or will be out seeing all the sights.

Yep stayed in club Quarters world trade a few months ago,was perfect, really nice hotel, felt safe area, quite quiet down there at night few bars/brewery bars & restaurants to eat at, but perfect for downtown attractions, everything else is a subway ride away so get used to navigating the subway and those oyster card equivalent systems

Please be prepared for the overwhelming stench of cannabis, rubbish on the streets and numerous, in fact huge number of people trying to sell you anything from counterfeit trainers, watches sunglasses on every street corner and, of course drugs.

On the plus side, the main sights are still amazing.

Staying near Times Square is always highlighted as the place to be but that is where more of the issues are I have highlighted, so if you want some advice I would stay further away from there and walk there f you want to be in it, be nearer 5th Avenue or Central Park, just wanted to give you my thoughts. We stayed in at Aliz Hotel, really small but really nice place!!

One bonus when we were there was as we were waiting for a Pedicab to take us around Central Park (it's huge) I was sat at a cafe a few minutes away, and I saw this chap walking towards me and thought "that can't be who I think it is", and didn't want to stare, so turned away, only for the person to come back and say "I thought I would come and shake your hand for wearing that shirt" (Town white away kit), the chap in question was Tyrone Mings, had a brief chat with him about his fitness and then he went on his way, nice man.

Not sure it helps but thought I would let you know my thoughts

Hope you enjoy!!

Yeah the homeless situation in New York involves most side alley streets and gratings becoming open toilets.

And yeah Times Square was the only time I wasn't that comfortable with the crowds and hawkers accosting you. Fwiw it's million times better than it was 30 years ago but still it's difficult to tourist Times Square.

I hired a bike and rode round Central Park which was fun it's too big to try and walk around it imo 😁

Can't advise you on accommodation sadly as every time I have been to NYC it's been on a cruise ship (5 times). What I can say, unless you already know, is that it's a great City. Absolutely love it. Have been to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and when we went through Battery Park one time it was an anniversary of 9/11 so they had flags for each person killed and a copper globe that stood outside one of the towers which has a large dent in it, presumably from debris falling from the collapsing tower. Last September we took a taxi to Hudson Yards which is a new multi billion pound complex with shopping Mall with the likes of Van Cleef and Arpels, Rolex, Gucci etc. But has also several shops where things are a bit cheaper. Have been to the Hamptons to see where those with deep pockets and short arms go on their vacations. Macys department stores takes up a complete block and has an original wooden escalator and old lift in it. Lot's of bargains and outside is a small park area to sit where they have musicians turn up and play. Tiffany's a place again where you can't be short of a few readies has a lift attendant who gives you a history lesson on your way up. Times square is mad at night with people going to shows, listening to music, dressed up as King Kong, milling around and if you like M&M's of Hershey you have two huge shops in the area. Really there's something for everyone. The funniest experience we had was whilst walking around NY we by accident end up outside the NY police dept. Two policemen where on what I think were Harley's. So I thought I'd take a photo. They knew I was watching them, so decided to take off. One forgot to lift his bike stand up and almost came a cropper.

Stayed here last week: https://www.citizenm.com/hotels/united-states/new-york/new-york-bowery-hotel

Great location, brilliant rooftop bar with 360 views and nice rooms (albeit on the small side, but imagine that's probably par for the course in Manhattan). Interesting part of town for food, shopping and bars but I think that's probably true of everywhere there.

The Bowery must have changed since my only visit to New York in the late 70s (pot holes and all).

It was home to CBGBs (the birthplace of punk) and described thus.

The Bowery was the perfect setting for the venue – seedy, run-down and notorious for its winos and crime even in the best of times. In the years when New York City was a den of crime, heroin addiction and about to literally go broke at any moment, CBGB’s fitted right in.

EDIT. Interesting video about the closure of CBGBs which came about because of a real estate boom. It also contains some great footage of the bands.

All that now remains to remember those days is Joey Ramone Place, situated on the corner of The Bowery and Second Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side
