It's getting fcuking scary for Jews around the world 19:04 - Oct 29 with 110679 viewsGlasgowBlue

As per Dan's idea, this is the one thread for posting anti semitism awareness in the aftermath of the 7/11 pogrom.

I think what people are trying to get at Chorley is that this thread isn't the place to discuss what you wish to discuss.

If you wanna start a new thread or possibly even post on the large How Many Palestinian Lives thread on subjects such as the pros and cons of zionism or the weaponising of antisemitism by the state of Israel then those invested in this thread will probably find that less upsetting.
Perhaps I'm wrong?

This just isn't the place to post it and posting it on this thread is only gonna upset people for no good reason

I get that and your explanation is appreciated.

I understand people want a two thread solution but I've always thought that we will never achieve long term peace that way and as painful as it will be initially, I've always preferred the one thread solution. People should have to put their differences to one side and just get along in order to live.

And with that, I will leave this thread.

I haven't added much to this thread lately because sadly it's all becoming so normalised and I'd just be posting the same type of incident were just the town and victim would be different. However, this one has really stopped me in my tracks.

"An art teacher in Berkeley, California told her class of second-graders to write "Stop Bombing Babies" on sticky notes to be plastered by the door to a Jewish teacher's classroom"

"a number of antisemitic incidents, including mob attacks against Jewish students. The incidents have reportedly forced many Jewish students to remove their Stars of David and cease wearing items associated with Judaism".

"Jewish students have been questioned on what “their number is,” a reference to tattooed numbers placed on Holocaust victims in concentration camps.

Other students have heard their peers say “kill the Jews” in the classrooms and hallways of their education facilities".

Shocking, and anyone who engages in behaviour such as this is not progressive left in my view.

This morning I visited a firm of notaries in Old Jewry, close to the Bank of England.

As the names suggests, it was once an area occupied by Jewish people, and there was a blue plaque on one of the buildings which said the following.

"The Great Synagogue stood near this site until 1272,"

Digging a bit further I came across the following, which is proof, if proof were needed, of antisemitism and the persecution of Jewish people going back an awfully long time, and much further back than the 12th century.

"The Old Jewry was a Jewish ghetto in twelfth and thirteenth centuries in London.

Within old Jewry Street once stood the Great Synagogue, or the center of religious life for the Jewish population of medieval London. Following the great difficulties experienced by the Jews in England in the thirteenth century, the Great Synagogue was closed in 1272. Shortly after its closure, Edward I’s Edict of Expulsion (1290) resulted in the expulsion of Jews from England until their informal readmission in the mid-seventeenth century.

In order to better understand the historical significance of the Jewry one must first recognize the circumstances under which Jews migrated to London, the rules and regulations to which they were bound under the English crown, their role in the development of London as a financial centre, and the reasons for their expulsion.

Beginning in the late eleventh century, William I encouraged Jews to migrate to London as part of a policy of stimulating commercial and financial development– a policy that proved to be instrumental to the restoration of London’s economic infrastructure following the devastating Norman Conquest of 1066.

Thus, with their arrival, the Jews brought with them money that they lent to the King at interest when the tax and feudal dues from his counties and wards were not duly collected. For their services, the Jews of London were given rights proclaimed in the Statutum de judaismo issued under Henry I. Under this ‘Jewish Charter’ the Jewish population of London was guaranteed, according to Brown and McCartney, “liberty of movement through out the country, relief from ordinary tolls, protection from misuse, free recourse to royal justice and responsibility to no other, permission to retain land pledged as security, and special provision to ensure fair trial.”

Although succeeding rulers confirmed the rights established under the charter, English contempt for the Jewish population grew with the passage of time. English disdain for Jews reached its peak in the thirteenth century as a result of numerous financial disagreements and criminal allegations, most of which were false and founded on jealousy and an irrational fear of the foreign and unknown. By 1290 the persecution of England's Jews turned into bloodshed: Jews were massacred at London and York pogroms, and those who were not killed were stripped of their rights granted to them by charters.

Although trade and the need for capital were growing under the reign of Edward I, who was in debt from the moment he began his reign until his death in 1307, the people of England refused to accept the presence of a Jewish community in their kingdom.

Given the historical context of the medieval Jewish population, it becomes evident that the ghetto of Old Jewry, like all of the ghettoes in the history of mankind, formed as a result of social, legal, and economic pressures. The anti-Semitic sentiment within the Christian population of London encouraged Jews in London to take advantage of the rights granted unto them under the Statutum de judaismo. In effect, the ghetto of Old Jewry was formed by–and as a safe haven for–Jewish financiers and their families. Nevertheless, the Jewish community’s seclusion within the streets of Old Jewry only worsened their obscurity– a factor that contributed to the English disdain for Jews until its breaking point."

EDIT: Here's an article on the 1189 and 1190 pogroms.

Interesting programme now on Radio 4 showing the parallels between what is happening now and the anti-Jewish pogroms in the 12th century, with Jews being falsely accused of killing Christian children.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0021w6y

And here is more from Wikipedia.

In England in 1144, the Jews of Norwich were falsely accused of ritual murder after a boy, William of Norwich, was found dead in the woods with stab wounds. William's hagiographer, Thomas of Monmouth, falsely claimed that every year there is an international council of Jews at which they choose the country in which a child will be killed during Easter, because of a Jewish prophecy that states that the killing of a Christian child each year will ensure that the Jews will be restored to the Holy Land. According to Monmouth, England was chosen in 1144, and the leaders of the Jewish community delegated the Jews of Norwich to perform the killing, after which they abducted and crucified William. The legend was turned into a cult, with William acquiring the status of a martyr and pilgrims bringing offerings to the local church.

This was followed by similar accusations in Gloucester (1168), Bury St Edmunds (1181) and Bristol (1183) .In 1189, the Jewish deputation attending the coronation of Richard the Lionheart was attacked by the crowd. Massacres of Jews at London and York soon followed. In 1190 on 16 March 150 Jews were attacked in York and then massacred when they took refuge in the royal castle, where Clifford's Tower now stands, with some committing suicide rather than being taken by the mob. The remains of 17 bodies thrown in a well in Norwich between the 12th and 13th century (five that were shown by DNA testing to likely be members of a single Jewish family) were very possibly killed as part of one of these pogroms.

EDIT: such slanders are known as Blood Libels.

It's getting fcuking scary for Jews around the world on 14:14 - Jan 28 with 529 viewsGlasgowBlue

Following in from yesterday’s emotional events, I’ve not posted on this thread since June 11. So here’s a reminder that it’s still getting fcking scary for Jews around the world.

Religious hate crime in England and Wales rose by a record 25 per cent in the last year, The highest figure in annual hate crime in over a decade was driven by offences against Jews. According to the Home Office report. Attacks targeting Jews more than doubled to 3,282.

Antisemitic offences accounted for a third, 33%, of all religious hate crimes in the last year. Jews account for just 0.5% of the overall population in the UK. 96% of Jews in 13 EU countries say they experience antisemitism in daily life.

Never Forget an Never Again.
