Great addition to the squad and should be a reasonable price. Darren Ambrose says he was an Ipswich fan in his youth as well.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but I think with Szmodics it's so out there that you're taking some additional risks here.

If he potentially brings any of that vibe to training or the dressing room, that's an issue. Even if he doesn't, off the pitch you're really dependent on him excelling right from the start and never really dipping in form. Because the second he does dip, it'll be because he doesn't care, hates the club etc. Easy for that to spiral into mutual loathing between supporters and player.

Just don't see that you'd risk it.

Think there's also an issue of who do you drop to accommodate him? We're not going to pay £5m plus for a bench warmer and at the stage of his career he's at, he isn't going to move somewhere to play second fiddle. Does he displace Chaplin, who is a McKenna player through and through and contributing well? Does he replace Broadhead, who is our top scorer and one of our best players? He's not going to replace Hirst as he's a 10, not an out and out striker. I just can't see it for a number of reasons.

I've heard this too, can play on both sides but mostly plays on the right, but he's left footed, not sure posh would sell if they're top 6 pushing for promotion and they will be, so we'll be quoted a silly fee knowing them..

I was listening to David Gregory last night, (commentating on Colchester- Peterborough) and he's not usually one for gossip, but he was very clear that there's a lot of interest in Poku and that he's likely to move in January . He didn't link him with any club(s) in particular, beyond it being Championship. As for the fee, he said he'd be guessing Colchester would be hoping to get half a million out of it. That's about what Bristol C. got when Szmodics went from Posh to Blackburn ... but maybe Ashton got a better percentage deal there.

I'd always heard he was an Ipswich fan but lately the rhetoric seems to be that he hates us. Which is it?

Yes there has, but it's like people haven't listened to one interview from Ashton or McKenna in the past two years about player profiles and what the look for, not just football ability, the whole package.

I'd be very surprised he if fitted the profile they are looking for from an age/value for money/personality aspect.

Just out of interest, what do you perceive is wrong with Szmodic's 'personality'? (Yes, there was an infamous outrageous dive to get Peterborough promoted, but apart from that?)

It’s neither really.

He’s a genuine Colchester lad (Stanway specifically) that was with Colchester for a long time and his Dad is a Colchester fan. Sammie was a fan favourite and said a few bits when he was breaking through that played to the anti-Ipswich thing but nothing in any formal interviews (that I’m aware of).

He’s a down to earth lad with a young family who’s wider family is still in and around Colchester. If he feels his career would benefit from being at Ipswich (and that looks to be the case with a shot at the Prem being realistic) If he was offered a decent contract with town he’d jump at it I think.

If it wasn’t of interest the talk would have been shut down by now..

I don't remember this but he 'gave it the biggen' against us when scoring for Posh some years back, citing the Colchester rivalry in his post-match interview and describing beating us was 'extra sweet'. So not a fan lol but who knows he may have loved the area. Also that little extra emotional connection could make us more attractive to him in a roundabout way.

We need help for Hirst though and Szmodics is a Chappers-sized AM/FWD.

Suppose it depends on how highly McKenna rates him (if there is of course anything in our interest). I think we've seen with McKenna that he can be quite ruthless at times if he feels he can upgrade the squad (signing Harness in summer 2022, to then effectively replacing him in January 2023 with Broadhead).

Whilst Chaplin and Broadhead are absolutely top drawer footballers, we can't just be relying on them week in week out, and no doubt they will suffer dips in form over time. Szmodics would be an ideal player for competition, as not only would he suit that 10 role behind the striker, he has shown, certainly earlier in career, that he can play out wide ... and currently with Blackburn that he can play through the middle as a 9, although that's not quite the same role as our 9 plays.

Obviously the money has to be right, but if he was available for a decent fee, I'd snap your arm off to take him as I think he'd be fantastic in this side.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

A mate of mine knows him quite well. He would walk here if Blackburn accepted a bid and we put a decent contract on the table. Like you say, a proper Colchester boy - lived there when he played for Peterborough too I believe. Would be a hard deal to do with Blackburn though given how well he's doing this season!

Clarke is maybe the best example of this. I remember discussing with a poster who was confident Williams would only provide cover when he signed on loan, due to us having spent 7 figures on Harry barely 6 months prior, but McKenna instead is focused on who can be brought in that improves us, naturally.

If the budget allowed I'm sure he'd sign as many targets as he could, confident in his ability to retain squad harmony and coach new upgrades into our system. Szmodics, a ST and one more Morsy type would be great. Personally I'd shelve Szmodics if the budget only allows for two additions and I'm not sure if the interest people hint at stretches beyond this site?

My contact is here in PBoro and knows his stuff, of course I still take it with a pinch of salt and generally don't believe anything until it happens, but he does tick boxes in terms of his potential, we'll see what happens...
