V-Bites gone into administration :( 15:13 - Dec 15 with 1205 views | Ryorry | Bad news for those of us who enjoyed their vegan products - the falafels & cheezlys in particular were brilliant and staples in my diet. They're hoping for a takeover, with just skeleton staff remaining in place. Spoke with a helpful lass this morning, but unfortunately they took my money for an order on Mon. morning & went into admin in the afternoon! Am currently on hold with my bank to try & get my dosh back.

But I wonder if it's a big surprise given supply in the vegan and similar markets seems to be rocketing faster than demand. I always see a bunch of 'plant based' products on the Tesco reduced shelf, for example.

I don't think it's demand issue. There are just so many great vegan products now that they've been squeezed out. I am sure this is completely unfair but I consider them a 'last generation' brand compared with the new kids on the block who have made massive strides. I remember seeing their products in Holland and Barrett and they looked so uninspiring. It looks like they have finally had a much needed packaging update but I just can't see them competing with the big brands which are widely available. Again, just my perception and I might be being unfair.

I don't think that's unfair - their packaging, marketing & website had been clunky for years. I should have seen the writing on the wall - the Cheezlys in particular were becoming increasingly hard to source - I think they were hit very hard by the shortages & soaring price of soya - perhaps wheat as well to a lesser extent - due to the war in Ukraine. Sheeze are a decent alternative to the Cheezleys, just not quite as nice, not as much 'bite' to them. Bank have refunded me ('only'45 mins on hold ..) but I feel sorry for the staff laid off so close to Christmas.

Think it’s more that the cost of these products is often higher than their meat/dairy equivalents and people are trying to cut down their spending whilst supermarkets and big name suppliers continue to profit from the crisis. Seen it recently with other established plant based brands reducing their product range. The fact that creating products from animals can be cheaper than plants is a whole different conversation. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

As per my previous post, I think a huge part of VBites' problems has been the shortages + soaring prices of wheat & soya due to the war in Ukraine. It was particularly noticeable that the timing of the difficulty in sourcing Cheezleys coincided with the shortages of soya reported in the news at the time which were put down to the war. The old style cheezlys' main ingredient was soya, though in the past couple of years they switched to a coconut oil base for them. Wheat was a main ingredient of the falafels (along with chickpeas) and I believe many of their other products too.

That's the one. I'm not sure horrible is right but a complete fantasist and very strange lady. I do wish all the best to all those at the company though of course. Hopefully lots of choice still in the market for you
