Random old chant thread 18:28 - Jan 17 with 5956 views | SouperJim | Just for fun, post a random old and forgotten Town song. I'll start with this banger circa 2004:- Follow follow follow Follow the boys and big Joe When the scum are at Crewe We'll be playing Man U So follow the boys and big Joe

Random old chant thread on 12:42 - Jan 18 by The_Flashing_Smile | Of course mine makes sense, at the time yes I would have been singing about it at school if Ipswich had made it to Wembley. Who on earth describes people gathering somewhere as "your assembly"? And if they did speak like that, which they don't, it would be something like, "We'll sing about your assembly". "We'll sing your assembly" doesn't make sense on several levels! |
It's a quirky phrase. Possibly to/for/about has been omitted for scansion. Alternatively, an old military meaning for 'assembly' is the musical call itself for troops to assemble, so perhaps it is fans saying they will produce this rousing, rallying signal themselves for the players. "We'll sing in assembly" makes sense, with 'assembly' denoting 'together in our gathering', but the connection to school is too strong for most footy adults to not consider it a weird turn of phrase. There's no implication the lads will be gatecrashing primary schools tomorrow with "your".

Yeah the military meaning makes sense. I was thinking it must be a really old phrase, like 19th century or something. Never occurred to me "We'll sing in assembly" was odd at the time, but yeah middle aged men singing it would be slightly odd. Anyway, you learn something new every day!

To hell with Liverpool To hell with Everton, We will fight fight for Ipswich Until we win the football league. — If you’re standing on the corner with a yellow scarf round your neck, Ipswich boys will come and get you, And they will break your f..king necks. — If I had the wings of a blackbird If I had the wings of a crow, I would fly over Carrow Road And sh.t on the bast..ds below, below. below..

The first one was sung regularly in the 70s, maybe another good one to sing again? Think it was 'To hell with Liverpool, to hell with Man City' tho [Post edited 18 Jan 2024 16:20]
