Presumably we are scouting and looking overseas 16:24 - Jan 21 with 4345 viewsNutkins_Return

I know it was a bit step by step putting in the right data driven team but we've seen really no action from overseas. Surely we must be looking for a striker elsewhere as everyone is after the same players here.

Coventry seem to be using the international market well.

Something to add here, I can't find the article now but didn't Ashton mention that right now they were more focussed on the English market as it was easier to get not only the right sort of player they are looking for but also someone that fits in with the group.

I swear I read it somewhere but for the life of me can't find it now.

I agree no one has said we now don't need one now.

Perhaps there is a typo in your post, as this bit of it implies people are saying it's seen as something that's not needed: "It's something which is being said as not needed and not worth setting up as the rules didn't change until the summer". Regarding the readiness of other clubs to quickly expand their recruitment to include previously out of reach overseas players, hopefully you can now understand why clubs with an already established recruitment team might be more able to do so than a club that is still in the process of developing the recruitment side of things. If not I can try an analogy if that might help.

Think it may have even been McKenna but certainly it's been said that the domestic market is lower risk in terms of getting the type of character we would want. That's no disrespect to overseas players, but without a really extensive network that can give you a sense of what a player's character is like as well as their footballing attributes, it's much more of a risk. Let's be honest, whilst our signings have sometimes come out of the blue, they've all been pretty known quantities.

McKenna spoke about it a little bit at one of the last fans meetings but not much detail. But to the effect something we would possibly do more of but certainly no sense given at that time that it was likely for a while.

Agree with what you have said. I think it's not quite so much to do with character fit (this is just my opinion) but the time it takes to adapt to a new country/new style of play/language etc etc. Its a big change and hitting the ground running is less likely/expected.

Indeed, particularly in January when there's no preseason to get to know the area and your colleagues and start to adjust. It's asking a lot for someone to come in from overseas in January and make a big impact straight away.

This is probably what I'm remembering.

Guessing we might see some in the summer either way but probably not this window.

But Frimley makes a good point regards Plymouth managing to do it !

Have Plymouth done it? Other than Ben Wayne I can’t really think of one. All their overseas players have been English academies or colleges havnt they ?

Yeah, which overseas signing that Plymouth have made are we supposed to be jealous of?

The prospect of overseas talent is great for a moan because realistically none of us are in a position to watch football from 30-40 professional league systems, so you're just vaguely gesturing over there at hypothetical players that we should be going and getting. More complicated when you actually look at the players that rivals clubs have brought in and how they've adapted (or not) to Championship football.
