Birders... 10:53 - Mar 17 with 1232 views | Tangledupin_Blue | I think I had a raven in the garden this morning (near Ipswich hospital). All black plumage and sturdy dark grey beak. Looked like a crow but much bigger, body size close to that of a chicken. Would it be a raven?

Aren't they similar in size to crows? The bird I saw was less than ten yards away and much bigger.

Yes, rooks are same size as crows, if it was much bigger then you've got a raven.

A pair has bred in Suffolk for the first time since the 1800s and last years chicks, of which I think there were five, will be top targets for gamekeepers as they attempt to find a territory. IF it was a raven the easiest way to tell is the massive bill. Carrion crows are quite large up close but have a much less business-like bill

The beak is the really distinctive thing for rooks. They also look a bit "tatty".
