What is most alarming, is that soooo many conservatives are breaking cover and aligning with them. I underestimated the level of bigotry in a party that I have, in the past, voted for.

If you want a medal then you've backed the wrong horse. It's the Tories who will reward you with a medal if you donate enough of the filthy lucre into their coffers. [Post edited 27 Jun 2024 21:40]

Yep, sadly that’s right. Those of us who aren’t racist a-holes will be depressed by his comments, but his ilk will see them as a badge of honour. Reform are still on about 18%, so that’s a lot of people who empathise with his racist views. And people can’t say they’re surprised by it. It’s been obvious what Reform/UKIP are for years; they were born out of these negative views. It’s what drove Brexit in the main. Depressing stuff. And it looks like France is even further down that moral dead-end with Le Pen polling at about 35%. Ultimately most people are decent, so I just don’t understand it.

I've struggled to understand it too. I've sometimes wondered if TV shows like 'You've been framed' which started in the 1990's showed a side of us that "It's OK if it's happening to someone else". It was funny when that old lady fell over but if it was your gran???? It seemed to lead to a selfish "I'm alright Jack" attitude with the caveat that things would be even better if it weren't for them *others. Those *others can be whatever your prejudice/bigotry want them to be. It's different for each of us. This means that you can be a decent person that shops at Waitrose, lifts the toilet seat, gives to animal charities but still tut that the UK is declining because of those *others.
