| Anthem... 20:51 - Jul 10 with 844 views | Zx1988 | Are there any other countries that burst into their national anthem mid-match? Don't know why, but it just seems a bit incongruous. Is it just the nature of England support? Or is it a hangover from the days of The Troubles? | |

Yes, of course they do! I'd forgotten about them.

Mainly the inclusion of 'no surrender' half way through. As various chants go to prove (Fashanu, for instance) it doesn't necessarily matter how old the fans are, or how much knowledge they have of the origins.

Fair enough - I'd not noticed before. It wasn't a case of drama, per se. I just noticed the inclusion of 'no surrender' and it intrigued me (along with the inclusion of Rangers badges, and the word 'loyal' on England flags) whether it had its roots in goading Irish republicans, rather than just being a standard way of supporting one's team.

| Anthem... on 21:17 - Jul 10 with 612 views | Swansea_Blue | Wales do, but only from about the 70 minute mark, so it’s not a spontaneous chant. Much like Liverpool only sing You’ll Never Walk Alone just before the end of a match. England fans don’t seem to have much of a repertoire or much organisation. They also use it as a weapon rather than out of pride and passion. Every team that comes into Wales tries to bait the home fans by singing it. It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t such a dirge and pissed English fans weren’t so sh*t at singing it. | |
