In Vegas this week…. 13:31 - Jul 17 with 4768 viewsITFC_Forever

It’s a mad, bonkers and insane place.

Every time you think you’ve seen something amazing / bonkers / bewildering, you walk in to the next place and see something that tops it.

It’s a full on assault on the senses, most of it good, but you can see how it can eat people alive and spit them out again.

Off to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam today… it’s 5.30am here at the moment, but we’ve got an early start for the trip.

I’ve been to the Liberace museum! Only played blackjack, couldn’t understand craps! I was well up($500 to a non gambler!), they changed dealers, I upped my bets, came away all square!

The Atomic Museum ranks quite high in the attraction list if you have any interest in that topic and area 51.

Enjoying yourself I see…

Security ruining my fun.

They needed airing and why not make friends at the same time?

...old school, although they have given it a lick of paint and cleaned the carpets I think.

Downtown is much better value, the closest you'll find on the strip is Casino Royale, they used to to cheap bottles of Michelob in there, a couple of bucks a go.

Nice sticky carpet too.

Basically the closer you are to the middle the more everything costs.

Ellis Island, behind Ballys (Horseshoe?) is decent value, onsite brewery, cheaper drinks and gambling. Worth the short walk.

Ate at Ellis Island this evening. Not great, to be polite.

Beer was decent though.

If you want cheap beers, In the middle of planet Hollywood there is a bar on a corner (can't remember the name) it's after all the first set of shops I think. Up near the theatre. Beers are like 5 dollars, and food is also cheap (but not great)

Stopped off very briefly on a road trip in 1976. Can honestly say 48 yrs on it’s still the ghastliest place I’ve ever been to. The Grand Canyon by contrast is one of the most breathtaking sights on earth…. And is the drive onwards to California is quite an experience too, or was.

Probably not there any more but down one dirt track at the canyon where there was a metal railing you could lean on and peer down a vertical drop of precisely 1 mile. I expect health and safety has done for that.

If Vegas is the ghastliest place you have ever been to I can only say that you haven't got out much. I thought that Vegas was fun but quite silly when I went in 1998, the only negative was when I had to return a hire car and couldn't find the rental place (turns out it was under one of the casinos.) I went to the end of the strip and, to turn around, went around the end block. On the other side of all the glamour was a compound where itinerant, and no doubt undocumented, migrants pitched up for temporary work. The contrast was very stark and, although I have been in places where poverty looks to have people dying on the street, I think that was one of the saddest sights I have seen. But Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, knocks the spots off anywhere else for ghastly as far as I have seen. Nice people there though.

Anyway. This thread. Whatever became of 'What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas' ?

Poll: What was in Wes Burns' imaginary cup of tea ?

Been a few times. Love it.

Great food and beer. Limitless entertainment.

Doesn't feel unsafe or intimidating either.

Depends where you go to be fair. Such an odd place really, outside of the strip and all the wealth and gluttony and bright lights there's some proper, proper dives that are really unsafe. As you say, stick to the beaten track and you're OK though.

Sort of place I enjoyed for the 'experience' and glad I've been, but not sure I would rush back personally. Boggles my mind how people go there on a week long family holiday with kids, but each to their own.
