1) Szmodics will be done by the end of the weekend I believe.
2) Clarke will take alot longer but I’d be expecting him or a winger in. That could rumble on for another month though.
3) Then presumably we will need another keeper unless Walton is happy as the likely number 2 (although actually rated him above Hladky myself).
4) Another left back in case Leif is injured.
5) Another centre midfielder. Think we’re a Morsy injury away from being very vulnerable there. As decent as Taylor and Luongo have been, I think it’s too brave going with those two and Morsy as our centre mid options. The interest in Downes suggests we want someone of that class signed as well.
Is that enough? 5 more? I reckon so. Perhaps if we’re being greedy, another striker as a wildcard type option from abroad. I’m pretty sure we get Szmodics so it’ll have to be someone as well as him rather than an either/or situation.

Clarke & Szmodics is an either / or I'm told.
#9 still looks to be a target area.
CM (at least 1, maybe 2) is definitely a priority. There's a lot of talk of Morsy being replaced but I can't see it, he's nailed on in there. I do think we will want a new partner for him though. |

I agree Chocorange, its definitely an area where we need depth. Its a high energy and high output role across all 4 of those positions, and more often than not most of the starting 4 won't finish the game so we need at least 2 quality players for each position.
As it stands I would say we're probably at this:
Tier 1: Hutchinson, Burns, Delap, Hirst, Broadhead, Chaplin.
Tier 2: Ladapo, Harness, Taylor, Al-Hamadi (all for different reasons).
I would expect we would want at least 8 or 9 players in Tier 1, so that's possibly 3 additions. Likely a #9, wide left and #10. Versatility will be attractive, and Szmodics brings that. That will then free up 2 or 3 of that Tier 2 pot to move on in some capacity with 1 or 2 offering cover.
I don't know the reason why we can't expect both Szmodics and Clarke, perhaps its financial. Given we're also likely to strengthen in CM and #9 which won't be cheap, maybe we don't want to be spending £25m on those 2 players.

Not what I was told last night. Was told Clarke was a potential alternative if a deal for Szmodics didn't materialise, but not one we will pursue if we can get SS over the line. |
Sounds to me like a source-off, whose is better do we think? I'd happily see both here but CM and 9 are pressing areas too, so one + a loan is perhaps the better use of funds. |  | | |
