1) Szmodics will be done by the end of the weekend I believe.

2) Clarke will take alot longer but I’d be expecting him or a winger in. That could rumble on for another month though.

3) Then presumably we will need another keeper unless Walton is happy as the likely number 2 (although actually rated him above Hladky myself).

4) Another left back in case Leif is injured.

5) Another centre midfielder. Think we’re a Morsy injury away from being very vulnerable there. As decent as Taylor and Luongo have been, I think it’s too brave going with those two and Morsy as our centre mid options. The interest in Downes suggests we want someone of that class signed as well.

Is that enough? 5 more? I reckon so. Perhaps if we’re being greedy, another striker as a wildcard type option from abroad. I’m pretty sure we get Szmodics so it’ll have to be someone as well as him rather than an either/or situation.

I'm interested to know how much we've paid for him. Rumoured that we offered £6m and they wanted £20m (never getting that). Would think we might've met at somewhere around £8m? Awful lot of money for a player at that age, lets hope he can deliver.

Clarke & Szmodics is an either / or I'm told. #9 still looks to be a target area. CM (at least 1, maybe 2) is definitely a priority. There's a lot of talk of Morsy being replaced but I can't see it, he's nailed on in there. I do think we will want a new partner for him though.

We changed our whole front 4, due to the intensity they play at, in most games last season in the Championship; we will definitely need to do that in the Premier League.
That means we will need 8 players, of suitable quality (sorry Freddie & Marcus) to play those positions, for every game, which could suggest we'll need maybe 3 more in order to cover for injuries & suspensions.
If we see Hirst & Delap as our 2 strikers, & expect Al Hamedi to get good Championship minutes on loan, we will still need another centre forward should one of those pull a hamstring or worse.
Behind them, we will perhaps have Hutchinson & Burns for the right, Chaplin & Szmodics for the centre, and Clarke & Broadhead for the left side.
Now of course we like to sign players who are adaptable when it comes to their positions, so Omari can go centre, Szmodics can play left, & Delap can do a job out on the right, so it's not a simple case of like for like, square pins in square holes, however it does highlight how we do still need to sign Clarke AND Szmodics & at least another centre forward.

Agree with what you say but think the 8 will be this or something like this. Dont think we will get in another no9. Szmodics can play either.

I already said further up the thread I don't see them as direct competition, I'm just saying what I was told last night that Clarke was being lined up as an alternative not in addition to.

Its anyone's guess where KM sees the team shaping up though. I could easily see Szmodics off the left with Omari central and Burns right. Delap, Broadhead and Chaplin as well in the mix which could free up Omari to play right and Chaplin centrally. Delap perhaps #9. Loads of options and versatility really, even more so if we add another #9 as looks likely.

Still quiet on the CM front, don't suppose it will be for very long though.

Names/links aside I would say:

Goalkeeper (I think this happens anyway, as one of Slicker or Walton will go out)

Left back (we need to do something to take the load off Leif this year - Clarke/Johnson/Humphreys just aren't suitable back-up at this level)

Centre midfielder x2 (a starter and a back-up - I don't think we can expect Luongo to make 20+ appearances this season if we want to be successful. Taylor maybe better suited to that first replacement role but I don't think he looks after the ball well enough to play regularly either)

Left sided attacking midfielder (Philogene/Clarke/Szmodics would suggest this is a priority)

Central attacking midfielder/right sided attacking midfielder/striker (another body or two here but not sure which role - depends on where they see Hutchinson/Delap fitting in)

I make that six or seven new bodies, of which a couple could easily be Premier League loans.

I can't see us signing a right sided 10, Omari will play there alongside Chaplin or possibly even Taylor

A back up LB Deffo 1 or 2 CM's - Morsy will get several suspensions and may well get injured - we need a back up and prob a new starter to sit alongside him Another Striker A winger So 4, poss 5 - I suspect 2 or 3 will be loans and 2 or 3 permanents Prob a GK too, thinking about it, unless Walton is happy to stay as back up

You can only have two loanees in the Prem so that will clear that one up a little bit

If we go for a striker it means Ladapo and or AAH heading off sold/ on loan. If we go for the LB it means Edmundson freeing up a space. If we only do CM and L10 there are squad places for all those current at club. It still raises the question on game time /experience for Slicker, Edmundson, Baggott, Humphries, AAH, Ladapo but we have to have the depth for training and playing.

Thanks, that's a very clear way to look at it. The first friendly goes a long way to suggest that we'll be playing in a similar way to last season (mostly?) so a like-for-like comparison like this is really helpful.

We should also consider the way McKenna wants to play , with attacking players, and that means making 4 attacking subs every game around 65 minutes , for the front 4 … so to do that as a minimum you need 8 players , add in suspensions and injuries and maybe that’s 10. Broady already out apparently.

Last season the injury to Hirst meant we had to change the way we played when Kieffer came in , not something we will want to do in the Premier, where every5ing 8s looking like breaking at pace from a low block.

At the moment we have

Harness, Ladapo

Now supposing Ladapo is to go and Szmodics comes in, that’s only 8 players, add in Taylor makes 9 , still one more needed as a minimum.

I could see 2 more versatile attacking players coming in even after SS.

Above post supposes that AAH will go out on loan too, if not then that reduces by 1 the attacking players coming in.

For midfield we will def need 1, that allows Johnson to be 5th central mid option, with Clarke and Axel options at right back should that happen.

We will need left back cover, and a third keeper if Slicker goes out on loan. 2 keepers if Walton was to go too.

Ta - although in hindsight, I don't think we'll max out the squad (particularly with Omari / Delap not counting toward the 25) to give ourselves the option of bringing in an emergency free transfer after the window closes.

There's also potential that signings coming in could potentially cover several positions which would mean fewer than the 6-7 I thought; Johnson probably more of a replacement for Ball rather than JD, as he can cover CM if necessary, and looking at Greaves' heatmaps from last season likes to step out into midfield so could be another emergency option for one of the pivots.

Could probably get away with just 4 signings if they're versatile...CF, LW/10, LW/LB and CM

I’m not convinced Mass will be up to this level. We need cover for Sam given his disciplinary record and the likelihood that VAR will be looking at everything he does…

This is a perfect opportunity to build for the future and get the next cabs off the rank through the door

I agree Chocorange, its definitely an area where we need depth. Its a high energy and high output role across all 4 of those positions, and more often than not most of the starting 4 won't finish the game so we need at least 2 quality players for each position.

As it stands I would say we're probably at this:

Tier 1: Hutchinson, Burns, Delap, Hirst, Broadhead, Chaplin.
Tier 2: Ladapo, Harness, Taylor, Al-Hamadi (all for different reasons).

I would expect we would want at least 8 or 9 players in Tier 1, so that's possibly 3 additions. Likely a #9, wide left and #10. Versatility will be attractive, and Szmodics brings that. That will then free up 2 or 3 of that Tier 2 pot to move on in some capacity with 1 or 2 offering cover.

I don't know the reason why we can't expect both Szmodics and Clarke, perhaps its financial. Given we're also likely to strengthen in CM and #9 which won't be cheap, maybe we don't want to be spending £25m on those 2 players.

Be interesting to see how the rest of the window shapes up.
