Derek Cornelius 15:25 - Jul 26 with 2645 views | StockholmBlue | My team in Sweden is Malmö FF and I follow them nearly as much as ITFC. Now I am normally torn when it comes to suggestion players from one of my teams to another, BUT I will have to make an exception here. Malmö is about to sell their top-defender Derek Cornelius (Canadian international) to Olympic Marseille (while Lyon, Brest and FC Copenhagen among others are also interested). The supposed price seems to be about 4 million Euros. IF we are in the market for another defender this is the real deal. To say he is a light version of Van Dyke would be to devalue his capacity - he is obviously not at Van Dykes level but he has a lot of Van Dyke about him - big, strong, fast and good on the ball. He is by margin overshadowing Pontus Jansson as CB in Malmö and Pontus was doing alright in the PL only last year. Anyway, the downside of this is that he is on the left side where we just brought in Greaves. And while I am at it. Malmö is also about to sell Sebastion Nanasi. Hot prospect as leftsides attacker or as a number 10, would be great in the Broadhead role. He is considered the next Emil Forsberg by many, and share many attributes with him. So; as I wrote, I don´t like to suggest my teams to buy from eachother, but as both those gems could be lost to other clubs I feel this is the right time to do so.

I watched a game in Sweden in the smaller Gothenburg stadium around 94/95/96 IFK Gothenburg v Panathinaikos in a Champions league qualifier when Gothenburg used to regularly get in the Champions League. Jesper Blomqvist was the star player and scored a very good goal before he joined Milan and Georgios Donis was playing for Panathinaikos.

Also planning to go to Malmo for 2 nights, is it recommended? saw there was an incident there last week with 2 UK peeps. Is the City ok to visit? [Post edited 26 Jul 2024 16:49]

Hi, Djurgården vs Gothenburg should be a decent game with great atmosphere I would have thought. Djurgården plays on artificial (grass) and their surface is faster than the average artificial surface which makes it a bit different. I do not like artificial surface personally, and think it should not be aloud in the top divisions. Anyway, sorry for that. I think the game will be good, and more so the atmosphere. If there is anything our league can be competitive it is the atmosphere, tifos, etc. Malmö should be perfectly safe. I also read about the "incident" and do not know what has happened. Normally when this kind of things happens it is connected to gang crimes and criminal acts, so for a normal person Malmö as well as Gothenburg should be safe places. Another option if you are worried is to stay in Copenhagen and visit Malmö for the day. The connections are great. If you go to Malmö and happen to have nice weather, they have a nice beach close to the city center called Ribersborg. Otherwise Möllevångstorget, Turning Torso, Lilla Torg could be worth visiting. Hope you have a nice stay in Sweden. If Malmö plays while you are in Malmö I suggest you go and see them - best team in Sweden by far!

Yes, English football has always been the big dream for Scandinavian players, and every football fan follow an english team. The style of play suited scandinavian players in the 90s. Perhaps now english football has changed and become more modern/european compared to our good old leagues up here in the north - and our players might not fit in as easily as they used to. The 90s (and 80s) certainly was the golden years for IFK Gothenburg, winning the UEFA Cup twice, and competing well in the Champions League on several occasions. Must not forget that Malmö FF played Nottingham in the European Cup Final (Champions League) 1979. Now, though with money becoming all so more important in the game, we can only but dream of this type of success again. TWTD!

If you have access to a car and are thinking of going on excursions, the Kullen peninsula with places like Mölle and Arild are well worth visiting, and if you go a bit further north to the Bjäre peninsula you have Båstad and Torekov - also nice places. South from Malmö you have Skanör-Falsterbo, Ystad, etc.

Derek is canadian so that should not be a problem, and Sebestian, as most Swedes, will have studied English for at least nine years at school - so he should be fine I would have thought.

great - thanks for info - yes a work colleague (who is in Gothenburg) recommended this game as IFK Gothenburg travel in good numbers so looking forward to it! He mentioned the tifo too :) We have just come from Copenhagon (3 nights) loved it there, first time back since we played Helsingborgs, but that was all a bit hazy! I can't really remember, but I guess we all flew into Copenhagon and got the train up to Helsingborg. Heading to Oslo, then onto Bergen, Lillehammer and then onto Stockholm for 3 nights, then Gotland 3 nights, Malmo (2 nights) before heading back into Germany Malmo are away to Halmstads when we are there! I’m not sure you first sentence is true for Swedes. In the 50s,, Gunnar Nordahl, Gunnar Gren and Niels Lidholm and Kurt Hamein went to Italy, and arguably the three greatest players since then, Brolin, Larsson and Ibrahimovic never saw it as the crowning moment of a career to play in England, even if they all pitched up for a while, Brolin after he was crocked. Of the dozen or so best Swedish players, it could be argued that only Freddy Ljungberg is primarily associated with an English club. [Post edited 26 Jul 2024 23:25]
