Yerevan or Tbilisi or both? 13:15 - Oct 17 with 1765 viewsStochesStotasBlewe

The lad and me are considering something a little different for next autumn’s trip, he watches a lot of Bald and Bankrupt, and we quite like the idea of Armenia or Georgia although they appear to be a bit of a pain to fly to but time will be limited so it seems flying via Istanbul is the best option.
Anyhoo TWTD travellers, would we better based in Yerevan or Tbilisi, or maybe split the two and spend a few nights in each. Advice on alternative flights also appreciated 👍

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I don’t have any desire to go to either - but have you checked flights to Armenia via Paris? I base my suggestion only on seeing a flight and having to Google where it was. I think there’s quite a few flights.

Thanks. I’ll give it a look.

I've been to Georgia loads. Tbilisi is very civilised but very small - you'll always have options for nice food and bars but not masses to do there culturewise / sightseeing. The best thing about Georgia is the countryside. You can rent a car with full insurance for $20 a day and easily get out of the city. Kakheti is the main wine region just east of Tbilisi. There's a beautiful town there called Sighnaghi (2 hours drive from Tbilisi) which locals claim has the world's second longest wall behind the great wall of China. There are stunning monasteries and hills - just don't go too far to the Azerbaijan border...

If you've never been to Istanbul then it's worth spending a couple of days there on the way - especially as most connecting flights to Tbilisi get in around 3am.

Never been to Yerevan - I've heard it's similar to Tbilisi but less cosmopolitan.

Thank you. Some very good advice.

Hopefully, Georgia will have had a peaceful transfer of power after this month's elections and it doesn't explode into civil unrest...

Hopefully a very weak Armenia can successfully pivot away from a weakened Russia to the protection of the West, before Turkish backed Azerbaijan decides to either borrow back the rest of the small amount of disputed, currently Armenian held territory that they still hold, or take the whole country (their last war was only last year)...

Anyway, I am sure that both countries are well worth a visit in peaceful times. Just check the refund terms and conditions in case you need to cancel, or evacuate. :)

Went to Georgia 2018. Agree Tbilisi is lovely. Also went right up to Kazbegi which is great for hiking/walking if you're looking for that kind of activity. Careful where you go though, get a good map as we went a bit wrong and got turned back at a checkpoint as the border with the Russian backed breakaway region of South Ossetia was around a kilometre further on and the Georgian soldiers told us not to go any further as they couldn't guarantee our safety. Worth going to Kazbegi for the drive alone, up the Georgian Military Highway through amazing mountain passes.

Delicious and interesting food, great bread and fabulous wine that I've continued to buy ever since. Would love to go back some day.

I have spent a lot of time in Georgia and Tbilisi when commissioning the pipelines that run through Georgia from Azerbaijan to Turkey.
One of my favorite countries I have been to.
As previous posters have mentioned the wine is wonderful and it is said they are the oldest wine producing county. The vodka factory is also well worth a visit.
The black sea resort of Batumi is great as well
