The pool of talent was getting quite shallow already (with having cycled through a number of cabinets and leaders since 2016). A number of candidates are perching deliberately on the sidelines. Until the next generation comes to the fore (of which Badenoch herself is one, only an MP since 2017), it's going to be a case of resurrected big beasts and unknown try-outs.

Christopher Hope has called it a shallow Cabinet. "Looking at the names who are not there - James Cleverly, Oliver Dowden, Jeremy Hunt, Steve Barclay, Tom Tugendhat, Suella Braverman - it looks to me more like a shallow Cabinet rather than a shadow Cabinet. But it is four years until the next general election, and the Tory party is undergoing a shift to a new generation of frontbenchers, and all of these Conservatives have a chance to impress the electorate." And the fact that some of these haven't joined suggests to me they are biding their time for Badenoch's failure. [Post edited 5 Nov 2024 11:32]

The [potential] Government of none of the talents on 11:40 - Nov 5 with 985 views | Churchman | It’s a very small barrel. More of a Party Four really and like Watneys finest, it’s irrelevant and ancient history. After their meagre efforts of 14 years, they are not fit to comment and actually the ‘opposition’ shadows should be drawn up as a mix from the other parties.
