James Norwood... on 22:28 - Nov 16 by Garv | Bar Downes probably the best player we had during his first two years, and the only striker at the club able to play McKenna ball. Fashionable to call him rubbish though. |
I would say it's more hipster fashionable to say he was good tbh.

McKenna's got rid of every pre-Gamechanger player who was here when he arrived bar Woolfenden, and I doubt he lasts beyond the summer. Norwood did a decent job for us on the pitch. Off it? Yes, there were definitely issues.

He was a very good L2 player and a good L1 player capable of scoring goals at those levels. Think the championship was a step too far for him.

That's probably more down to the fact we had a team of L1 players, and we're now in the PL.

By the time McKenna arrived Norwood was about 31, I think. McK was looking to the future; Norwood's future, at L1 level, was behind him. [Post edited 17 Nov 2024 14:07]

I think the top half of L1 was a step too far for him too. Think we were desperate for a goalscorer, a talisman and given his previous record there was a lot of hope that he was a natural goalscorer that would just adapt to the level with better quality delivery etc. But everything about that first 2-3 months in L1 suggested that we were getting better results than our performances and Norwood was a good example of that too. He scored 8-10 goals relatively quickly, but any analysis of those goals showed that it wasnt quite the achievement it looked like on paper- pens, goals v bolton kids, howler from peterborough keeper- and he was missing a lot of chances against better teams.
