Not sure why given they’ve not had inflation and screw ups the U.K. has. Germany isn’t exactly good either. With Trumps isolation policies, the future doesn’t look great. Opportunity for Putin. I know Macron can get up people' noses but I think even the French would draw the line at Putin as President...

I always thought Barnier was a superb politician - providing he was on your side.

If sending your country’s parliament into chaos and a leadership vacuum is a blinder, then yes. I don’t see how France benefits though.

My simple-simon understanding of the inflation situ was that the French govt spent loads on subsidizing electricity. My equally simple conclusion is that maybe the cost of that catching up with them?

I thought a lot of french utilities were part govt owned anyway. And don't most french utilities own UK ones?

They do, but I suspect they ramp up U.K. utility prices to subsidise French. I certainly would in their shoes. Debt, lack of competitiveness, not sure what’s underpinning their problems. Need to understand it better, but the stats do say their predicted growth is far better than Germany’s or stagnant U.K. I think the main reason their problems are newsworthy beyond the potential for people like Le Pen is the economic effects on the rest of the EU, given France and Germany are the dominant economies. I need to read up on it

Without googling, I have feeling that edf was more or less nationalised in return for being kept afloat by the French govt during the energy crisis. Edit: to any experts reading, please by kind if I have this all wrong! [Post edited 5 Dec 2024 11:34]

Their problems seem as much political as economic. The attached is a little out of date but summarises. https://www.politico.eu/article/everything-you-need-to-know-france-political-cri As for its economy and EU rules, I don’t see the latter as a problem. France and Germany are the EU and write their own rules. If the minnows don’t like it, who cares?

They had inflationary pressures like us, spiked to 5.9, not as bad as ours though
