We owe Burns and all the League one/Champ squad... 21:35 - Dec 4 with 3661 viewsjasondozzell

...a hell of a lot. The least we can do give them our unequivocal support.

I'd rather get relegated with Burns, Chappers, Burg, Broady, Hirst, Mass etc giving it a go than stay up with a load of journeymen/loan signings or experienced prem players who don't mean anything to us.

Seeing Broady last night just underlined that we mustn't forget what got us here.

We needed quality and better players like Cajuste, Phillips, Delap, O'Shea etc.

But heart and the verve of the promotion teams still there. I hope KMac uses them well over this period.

Would like to see Mass get some more minutes. And Ali looked good yesterday. What a moment if he could get a goal.

I just have this feeling Broady is going to get us going again over next few games. He's always looked hungry but looks bang up for it after being out of the team for so long.

I have a view on this which is no doubt going to be unpopular.

We don't owe the majority of players anything, in my mind they are doing a dream job and getting very well paid for it. I actually think they have earned the reward they wanted, which is a part in a Premier League team, but that is down to a combination of timing, luck, coaching and club structure - you could argue that they owe the club/McK and Ashton more than we owe them for the way the team was formed, coached and players developed.

I get that we have a significant amount of emotional ties to this squad because of the success that has been achieved and memories, but the step up to the Prem and the ability required is far greater now than it was in 2000 or 1992 and sadly I don't think the majority of the promotion squad are good enough to perform consistently at this level.

Like I said, I expect to be shot down in flames for my opinion which is fine, but my support is for the club, and has been since I first stood in the ground in '79, and want what is best for the club to succeed and grow.

The squad over the last 3 years has built a new foundation for the club to grow and progress on, we can't risk some over-emotional loyalty undermine it.

This must be the club's approach, so I don't believe your post is too controversial, and it contains an important message for fans, who may not be fully happy when favourites fall foul of this pursuit of progress.

JD's OP contains an important message too though, albeit I'm less convinced than he is on some of the optimistic signs he sees. Even if fans are split on whether they'd be happier to see us relegated with last season's heroes, or to be successful with a clan of journeymen, for most of the season we do battle with what we have. Undermining the confidence of certain players because we're disappointed in their performance, because we don't think they're good enough for the level, is only going to cause harm. I write that not because of any words on this forum, but because frustrations are becoming increasingly audible in the ground.

I honestly don't get this viewpoint at all

All the players you've mentioned were part of a massive overhaul of the squad which was very much needed to get us from mid table league 1 to where we are now. They won a lot of games so we all love them

The squad has had another mini overhaul to make us competitive in the premier league, but you haven't warmed to them yet because they haven't really started winning?

In reality If they started winning you'd love them as much as you love Burns, Chappers etc but had those players not done as well as they had you'd probably be pining for Chambers and Skuse

Squads evolve but it's still ITFC. Get behind them and don't say ridiculous things like you'd rather we got relegated with the old squad than stay up with the new signings we've made

You've got an unnatural love-in with Broadhead. I'm not sure why you think he'll get us over the line.

Burns unfortunately either isn't fit, not good enough for this level, or both. You've got to realise thank we are thankful for these players, and we aren't going to get rid of all of them, we can't but ultimately we need a few more better to survive I feel.

They will have their roles, just not a prominent as previous seasons!

The reality is that in January with the exception of say Davies, Greaves, Hutchinson and Delap of the players we own, we would need to buy a new team to compete at this level.

Don't rate many of the other new signings, O Shea is OK but not a top level PL player. Shame about Ogbene, he could of been a good sub to bring on when we need pace. The Johnson signing now looks a strange bit of business on a 5 year deal, he is not at a high enough level to make a difference.

Burns, Chaplin, Hirst and Broadhead, Morsey, Sammy, Clarke would be at their perfect level in the championship so any experience they get this season is a positive.

Greaves and O'Shea are better and also apparently dropped due to leaking the team

Eh?

He was dropped after leaking the team when he was in it - really?! Or when he wasn't in it, which means he was not dropped. Sounds like nonsense. He's still very much involved and has been on the bench a lot.

However O'Shea is proving to be pretty good, certainly stronger in the air and quicker. McKenna has made his decision.

I suspect Wolf will leave at the end of the season: he'll be snapped up by a strong, ball playing Championship side.

I sort of hope he goes in January, rather than spending the year rotting in the reserves. At least Burgess got a proper run out, and the attacking players will be given their chances coming off the bench.

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

I'm with you, I hope he does too.

He's been very unlucky. Because of his position he has no value as a sub.

The modern 'squad game' is brutal for centre half's and goalkeepers.

I think we're missing a key point a little here. We all know that we are lacking depth in certain positions. Delap is our only starting striker atm and Palace wouldn't have scored that goal if Tuanzebe had been playing. I also think some of the on-field decision making is lacking. Why was Hutchinson on the right wing for Muric's kicks? Why did Muric insist on kicking it to him when he had no chance of winning it in the air? If that's where he's going to kick it every time, then surely Delap should be out there knocking it down for others. That would also give the opposition's drfence something to think about. I love every one of our squad and trust them to run through walls for the club. However, we have to be honest, not every position has genuine competition for starts.
