Tactics for closing games out 09:35 - Dec 9 with 892 viewsillusion_machine

Watching MOTD2, post-match analysis focused on the gaps between our defenders, especially in the later stages.

Why don't we go to 5 at the back or 3 CMs to shut up shop? We are too rigid in our "system" and rely on keeping possession to see out games which is hurting us time and time again.

Also thought Chappers was fantastic yesterday but should have been taken off for someone like Phillips around 85 mins. Our lack of CB on the bench could also be a weakness for closing games out.

I think adding another centre half is not the solution and just invites further pressure
strengthening midfield however could have helped

I'm not a massive fan of grinding games out like this but if we really wanted to be nuts with could have got another defender on, perhaps dropped a Phillips or Cajuste into the pocket between midfield and defence and moved Al-Hamadi into a midfield position

514 (no striker as such)

Have fun passing through that!

McKenna is a very good manager, I'm not entirely on board with the no centre back on the bench, I get that if Axel was playing, you could have moved him inside at times

I guess he views Clarke as your option but it's risky

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

I do think we could have brought on Harry Clarke in those last 10 minutes, taken off Omari and put Ben Johnson into a wing-back role like he played at Tottenham.
Omari wasn't really carrying the ball forward at that point and that gap which MOTD2 showed wouldn't have existed.
It was poor defending from Johnson and dreadful goalkeeping from Muric.
The second goal was another lightweight tackle from Burns, a reckless attempt at an intervention from Morsy and then a catalogue of mistakes from there on. Davis not tracking, others not getting back to the six-yard box to stop any danger.

It was a crushing blow and one we didn't deserve. But, VAR apart, you do pretty much get what you deserve in the Premier League and if you keep making mistakes and don't take your chances at the other end, it's not really rocket science that you won't win many games.

I think McKenna is starting to show his inexperience at this level as a manager. Understandable, because he is just that, inexperienced. But he is also IMHO, showing a worry8mg sign of rigid thinking.

Why is he so reluctant to play the two natural number 10’s at this club, (Chaplin and Szmodics) in that role?

Why won’t he try two strikers up front, ( especially given that young Delap is struggling to get to 60mins before totally burning out), this would surely help Delap and take some of the pressure of running and leading the line off him.

Why does he persist with a very erratic GK who has lost us more games than he has saved us.

Why does he nearly always make subs on 70 mins, and like for like. Why not mix it up a bit, change formation? This makes the opposition have to adapt….I’d suggest even opposition manager knows EXACTLY what McKenna will do in the match , every game.

Our players are trying to win games on adrenaline in the first 60 mins. When we run out of steam as we always appear to do, the subs have little or no impact, and why not have a defender on the bench to manage the game for the last 10 mins …no we put on the two most inexperienced, and lightweight players we have at the club to try and chase down their defenders, which failed .

McKenna either needs some experienced support himself. But This won’t happen, because he wouldn’t allow it. He’s a fantastic talent himself for sure, but he’s not infallible and isn’t the messiah.

He spent 3 years standing on the sidelines of Premier League matches with Man Utd.

None of what he sees will come as a surprise.
