Anyone flown to Japan? 12:56 - Dec 11 with 1471 views | Radlett_blue | I'm going there on holiday in October & looking at flight options, preferably premium economy as I am tall & can't do long haul in economy. Anyone had recent experience of flights there?

Anyone flown to Japan? on 13:16 - Dec 11 with 1401 views | bluelagos | Flew there for the 02 World Cup - so not recent - from Lagos went via Austria from memory. Flew with JAL who were fine. Did an internal flight and caught the fast trains too - awesome, quick but not cheap. Had a knife on the internal flight confiscated at security - and they returned it when I got off. Was quite embarrassed when they found it as I'd forgotten to put it in the hold. Just an example of how ridiculously polite the Japanese are to visitors. Can't imagine Heathrow security being quite so forgiving/helpful. Kyoto well worth venturing to. Didn't make it to Horishima but everyone who did spoke respectfully of it (like people who go to Aushwitz) and how the events are remembered.

Thanks to you & Carvella who DM'd me. We will be using JAL as my recent experiences with BA have been less than positive.

Be careful, BA and JAL codeshare, so you may end up on BA anyway!

Anyone flown to Japan? on 21:13 - Dec 11 with 1069 views | Crawfordsboot | I visited a few times on business and my wife came out on one occasion for a bit of a holiday. Tokyo is expensive but we took a bus out to the Hakone region in the foothills of Mt. Fuji where prices were much more reasonable. We stayed in a small Ryokan or BnB. It had a traditional Japanese bath which you sit in with water up to your neck. The water from Mt. Fuji hot springs flowed in one end and out the other. It was magical but remember to wash thoroughly before getting into the bath!! Highly recommended. [Post edited 11 Dec 2024 21:13]

Anyone flown to Japan? on 00:12 - Dec 12 with 962 views | Bugs | My daughter has been looking at going next year and has found the cheapest way to get there is via a stop in Shanghai. I think she plans to have a couple of days in Shanghai, then get a flight into Japan from there. I think the two days in Shanghai is paid for from the savings from not going direct with some change. This is via Air China, I believe. Which on their new A350 planes isn't a terrible airline to use, Although I think the second leg is on a 737 or A320. But that's only a two-hour flight.
Anyone flown to Japan? on 09:23 - Dec 12 with 803 views | ibbleobble | Yes. Flown quite a few times. I do the quick stop at Charles de Gaulle for an hour and then on from there. To be honest, most flights aren’t full so premium economy is waste of money. The LOPA on Japan airlines is a 2 - 6 - 2 system I think from memory so if you select your seat in the 2 aisle, you get lots of leg room for a fraction of the price of PE. Look at LOPA layouts as part of chosong your airline route. PE is nice but at nearly £1k, I’m not sure it’s that great value.

Yes, JAL & BA are partners & we've been advised that the most cost effective way of flying Premium Economy is BA to Frankfurt & then JAL to Tokyo.

Anyone flown to Japan? on 17:20 - Dec 12 with 657 views | WeWereZombies | Flew there in January 2020 but cannot remember who I flew with. Being of modest height cannot help you with seating hints anyway... Second Lagos's recommendation for Kyoto, but make time for Nara too, and the spectacular aquarium in Osaka if you fly into that airport. An ideal way to spend that 'getting over the jet lag' day. I did make it down to Hiroshima (and Nagasaki) to do my dutiful visits to those tragic sites (everyone should, you will have a more rational perspective on life thereafter.) Also went to the art island, Naoshima, very enjoyable and the ferries across the Sea of Japan were worth taking.

I thought on the way back they now fly over the arctic which has reduced the flight time somewhat but as you say, it's still longer than it used to be. SB
Anyone flown to Japan? on 18:55 - Dec 12 with 619 views | Meadowlark | Spent two months working in Japan, but that was in 1985, so no, can't help. All I can say is that any flight routed through Tokyo was tons more expensive than using regional airports in Japan, but whether or not that is still the case, I don't know?

So the planes should fly in the opposite direction and fly over the USofA to Japan, it will quicker. Clearly it's about time planes used Google maps for the quickest route.
