fascinating read on Humphrey Smith of Samuel Smith on 14:41 - Dec 19 with 1845 views | Zx1988 | I had the dubious pleasure of drinking in one of his establishments in Middlesbrough the other night - fully emblazoned with signage declaring their outright ban on digital devices. Ironically one of these was placed next to a large chalkboard exclaiming that patrons should follow the pub on Facebook: I get the feeling that Humphrey's son, who runs the southern part of the estate, takes a slightly different view, as I've never noticed the London pubs to have such a ban in place. If, as the article suggests, Humph is going to be retiring this month, perhaps the northern pubs will be dragged into the 21st century?

The ban did previously extend to the London pubs but I think they gave up a while ago (maybe a decade). The Captain Kidd down in Wapping is a very nice Samuel Smiths establishment. Mr Smith himself seems less of a charmer. SB

Yes, I've always enjoyed the Captain Kidd - a lovely place to sit by the river and enjoy a pint or two of a summer's afternoon.

fascinating read on Humphrey Smith of Samuel Smith on 16:11 - Dec 19 with 1729 views | Steve_M | I read that earlier, it's a great piece of journalism. Also been very well lawyered as I saw pointed out. What a revealing portrait of the man though, weird fetish for the past to the point of not actually being bothered about running a business. Some of the Sam Smith's pubs in London - the Princess Louise especially - are stunning building. The beer, on the other hand, is ubiquitously sh1t.

I think I've been to the Citie of York and definitely the Cheese whatever one on Fleet street (everyone ought to go to that one - its a very special building, despite the beer).

The pub I am currently in, The old ford in North Camp appears to require the user of swearing at every opportunity. If you're not using the f word as your only adjective, you're definitely not a local 😁 Property old school southern working man's boozer. Love it.

The Cheshire cheese. It has one of the reserved sight lines of st Paul's just out the front, which caused the strange shapes of the cheese grater and the walkie talkie. Sam smiths pubs used to be cheap enough to be worth going to despite the terrible beer, but now some of their places (like chandos next to Trafalgar square) are over 7 quid a pint
