Leif Davis 22:35 - Dec 22 with 1848 views | cymroglas | I never managed any football team apart from on Championship Manager so feel free to rip me to pieces for this thread! We have often played Ben Johnson in a higher role this season. Leif os arguably better than Johnson going forward so why not play him in a higher role and bring Townsend in at left back? He would also arguably a better defender (Leif) when we are really under pressure.

Neither can really beat a man 1 on 1. They need space to make something happen. You move Davis up. Fullbacks steps off and doesn't let him past, Davis is ineffective. What we haven't got this season Is the balance we found last season where the trio of broady. Luongo and Davis worked together to make spaces and create chances. Hoe may times did we see the trio pass the ball around and Davis whip in a ball for chappers or broady made space for Davis to find hirst with a zip pass who they laid it off for someone else. I will add tho.. we've spent the last 2 seasons relying alot on our left back for chance creation. You think that needs to change at this level. I mean how many sides rely as much on their fullback as we seem too? [Post edited 22 Dec 2024 22:44]

" I think this is missing the point as I've said when others have suggested it. Putting in a more defensive LB and moving Davis forward changes the whole dynamic of how we play. That is fine if that is what we want to achieve but could just as well be achieved by telling Davis to play more defensively. Davis seems to be getting the blame for something that is clearly a tactical decision rather than something absolutely fundamental and unchangeable in his own game. I do think he could play further forward but that is an entirely different discussion. "He would also arguably a better defender (Leif) when we are really under pressure." Do you have any evidence to support this view? As I've posted in other threads, we've never really seen Davis play as an orthodox defender. SB [Post edited 22 Dec 2024 22:43]

Leif Davis on 22:42 - Dec 22 with 1773 views | bournemouthblue | There's a reasonable argument for him being our best option on the left ahead of the likes of Szmodics, Broadhead, Clarke or even Hutch frankly, as a left midfielder, not that it's quite as straightforward as that but he's probably our most dangerous player going forward, certainly for assists We could even play him in a back 5 as a wing back playing Townsend or Greaves inside of him The more adventurous version of that system sees that player overlap or underlap at times as well Szmodics is a number 10 and haven't really played him there, which I find mad but that's another debate for another thread

The pile on Davis is a bit silly, you are right, it's tactical at times, that's not to say he's faultless but the way we play does expose him, that's certainly true Tottenham did similar things today themselves and have a far bigger budget than us

I did not blame anyone btw. And i accept Leif plays the way he does (which exposes us) because he is probably asked to attack as much as possible

Burns was fairly important for us in the Championship too but is struggling at this level Chappers was another important element which hasn't worked as well in the Prem, that's a problem really Defensively we are probably a bit better than last year at times but probably at the behest of our attacking play We have been exposed at right back to a point where playing with an overlapping full back has almost been abandoned, deemed to risky to be caught out of position
