Newcastle’s 1st goal 09:42 - Dec 24 with 1564 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | Apologies if this has been covered but I noticed that we mixed up our kick off routine Saturday and then weren’t set defensively. I noticed Hutchinson was on the right for kick off, but as soon as that broke down with Chaplin’s pass wide, Hutchinson was then retreating to the left and Burns, who was on the left for kick off, started making his way back to the right, then Newcastle get out round the back and we haven’t got a shape off the ball. Davis has committed to the press, but Burgess isn’t set getting across positionally and is therefore hesitant dealing with the ball over to Murphy and within 30seconds of kick off, we’re 1-0 down. Wonder if the kick off was a pre match plan inside or one by the players moments before kick off? Either way, I doubt we will see that again.

It was a key moment on 10:05 - Dec 24 with 1455 views | unstableblue | Firstly it was a nice idea. The majority of Town players had grouped on the left and moved forward into the Newcastle half as a pack… Hutchinson was relatively free, and could have attacked the box and fed that group of players, or broken through himself for a shot. It would have put early pressure on Newcastle and got into their heads a bit. But Chaplin’s switch ball to Hutchinson was poorly executed as was Hutchinson’s control and positioning - both had really poor games, as did do many players on the day. Newcastle intercepted the Chaplin through ball and the rest is history. We were out of position and on the back foot. And suddenly they are getting the early impetus A game changing moment. And it was a mistake. In the Premier League mistake are punished ruthlessly. [Post edited 25 Dec 2024 10:46]

Newcastle’s 1st goal on 10:07 - Dec 24 with 1443 views | gringoblue | It looked like a fake out to initially go long on the left, with Chaplin instead playing it out to Hutchinson on the right. Unfortunately, Chappers overhit the pass and the rest is history. Bad execution!

That’s the issue at this level , execution at times not good enough and it costs us in every game.

the issue is not the starting position, but the swapping to their normal positions when we were not in possession. If Burns had tracked back rather than ambling to the other side of the pitch, things might have turned out better ?
Newcastle’s 1st goal on 14:52 - Dec 24 with 1049 views | SomethingBlue | Looked (even at the time) like we rushed the kick-off, clearly trying to catch Newcastle out but ultimately doing exactly that to ourselves. Have to take the rough with the smooth as fast starts have served us well often enough, but we could probably have been more poised.

I don’t think it’s right to blame the fans this time.

Newcastle’s 1st goal on 16:21 - Dec 24 with 891 views | Pioneer_Blue | The whole play from kick-off is on Newcastle's YT highlights. Saw it live and watching it back there are two key points for me. First, Anthony Gordon tracks back from kick-off which narrows the angle / space Chaplin has to play into which results in him rushing or overhitting the pass. Maybe they planned the routine expecting him to stay on halfway which would leave Omari one on one with Lewis Hall and an overload at the far post. Second, as you've said. Having lost possession, when Schar plays the upfield pass, Hutchinson and Burns are crossing back in the central third rather than pressing. Should probably have held position on the 'wrong' side until we were back in possession or ball went dead for a guaranteed period of time e.g. goal kick. [Post edited 24 Dec 2024 16:22]
