Johnnie Walker - RIP 16:41 - Dec 31 with 1443 viewsWinchBlue

Well I’ll be raising a glass to Johnnie Walker tonight. His Sounds of the Seventies was my Sunday afternoon staple for many years.

Yes likewise. He didn't sound a well man on his last show before handing over to Whispering Bob.

A glass of Johnnie Walker for Johnnie Walker has a pleasing symmetry to it.

Although we all knew this was on the cards it's still very sad news.
A thoroughly decent fella and a great broadcaster.
Will be much missed.
Go well Johnnie.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Been listening to Sounds of the 70s on the drive back from London, which was meant to be a 70s party playlist and is now a very touching tribute to JW.

It would seem that Bob Harris only found out as he was about to go on air - such amazing professionalism to keep it all together whilst paying tribute to his pal in such circumstances.

The clip they played of Johnnie's final sign-off during his obit on the 5pm news was absolutely heartbreaking.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

A legend. The background sound to my teens . Radio Caroline on my tranny in bed.

Via his late 1970's / early 80's Radio Luxembourg shows I discovered a ton of great bands, not least the Dead Kennedys which I guess was part-due to his time in SF; very much associate him with the Peel era, good bloke.

Not so sure about this. Mr Walker used to phone my home, wanting to speak to my sister, who was a big fan & wrote him letters but she was only 14 years old.

I made a comment on a BBC website that was talking about a new Ford Escort that is being made. I described during the 70's wedging my tranny in between the top of the seat and the seat belt hanger. But it would only make a sound when I drove north/south. Anything of east or west in it and I lost signal.

My comment was banned for using the "t" word.

The world has gone mad.

Thanks for the memories Johnny

He stood in for Terry Wogan on quite a few occasions and in my view would have been a worthy successor, being both laid-back and very funny in the role.

Instead, they opted for shouty and rather humourless DJs as replacements for the Radio 2 breakfast show, in an effort to win a younger but still ageing audience.

Rock'n'Roll Radio by the Ramones nicely captures listening to radio in bed, something I started doing with Radio Luxemburg (being a bit too young for Radio Caroline Mk. 1).

Do you remember lying in bed
With your covers pulled up over your head?
Radio playin' so one can see
