Leeds (A) 1990. Five days after the Port Vale debacle, we beat an ultra defensive top of the league Leeds 1-0. Southampton (A) 1991. Dozzell scores early on. We lose 3-2. We take all three sections of the Archers End. Town fans popping up in home areas, fights breaking out. Forest (A) 1997. Ok, lost 0-3 but had a banging night out afterwards at the Rock City. We were also celebrating Bowie's 50th birthday. |  |

If memory serves, heavy pitch, blustery day, cracking atmosphere and a proper ding dong game, won by a scuffed Mick Mills shot. Amazing to think there was no live tv coverage of any game other than the final back then. The two best teams in the league slugging it out in the 3rd round, a special day when the FA cup still meant something. Tonight, we had the BBC trying to convince us we were witnessing the enduring ‘magic’ of the greatest cup competition in the world, as Qatar City slaughtered a team four leagues below them in their soulless, disinterested warehouse. Pep appreciating the importance of the cup, as an opportunity to restore the fragile confidence in his state-sponsored, over-worked collection of multi-millionaire reserves. Modern football, eh? |
The pitches levelled things out, that's always been the beauty of the cup, now pitches are pretty good even at non league level, certainly to what they used to be during the winter... In 81 as a kid going to the Cup semi final at villa park to play City in the semi, our coach ploughed into the back of a road sweeper vehicle, can you believe it would have been crawling along the inside lane at 20mph lol, those were the stupid days....coach replacement, made the game at bang on 3pm, Paul Power free kick, say no more... |  | |  |

Also, I seem to recall that in winning the replay we broke the record at the time of consecutive 3rd round victories. It may have been 16 years? He didn’t score an own goal, he gave away a penalty. There was an own goal scored in that game, but it was by Bradford’s David Evans, who lobbed his own keeper from about 25 yards. |  | |  |

Indeed. Then that run came to an end the next season, losing at home to Birmingham in an absolutely dismal match on a rock hard pitch and a baltic day. Game probably shouldn't even have gone ahead as the players were very wary of making challenges. That then led to a further couple successive 3rd round losses. Man U td (H), Forest (A). |  |

I did the home game (38000 ground record) saw zilch. Didn’t go to the Elland Rd game (school), did the Tues Filbert St 0-0 - saw zilch. Again, not tall enough. Crowd was all drunk and a highlight apart from the atmosphere of a neutral ground was a dog doing tricks before the game. Slipped off and did the Thurs game too sitting in the tiny little stand Woods scored in. Oh and my dad got his car door dented by some irate Leeds fans booting it after I stuck two fingers up at them and laughed with the time honoured gesture after the game. 1970s FA Cup football was not without incident! |  | |  |
