Chelsea have made a second approach for Delap this window.... 14:34 - Jan 14 with 9619 viewsitfcjoe

..but Delap isn't keen on the move now

According to Simon Phillips on his Substack, who generally seems pretty fair, reliable and decently connected

If we accepted a huge offer but got to keep him on loan until the end of the season would be better. Thats if we sold in the first place.

I think the way PSR works, we probably won't have to get the deal out of the way early as long as we are fairly confident it's coming. We could spend the money across the side in the knowledge that Delap is bringing £50m+ in for us at some point in the future

unlikely. Without knowing the details of city buy back, but if it is say 30 odd million an we are getting bids of 50, you can be sure city would activate then sell on themselves for the profit. See Phllogene to Villa in the summer

Life is not always about how much you get paid in your job. Having said that it's difficult to not be lured by much better money. Luckily I have never been out of a job except when it was my choice. I worked at the lawnmowers in Stowmarket a couple of times in the 70's before moving to I.C.I. in the late 70's and whilst the lawnmowers was a sh*te job the guys I worked with were great. It wasn't until the early 80's when I moved from the filling shop to E-site resins that the chaps I worked with were as much fun, we had some great times with plenty of laughs. Sadly I do believe the fun has been taken out of work these days. Anyway on or back to players like Delap. The lure of triple the wages and a higher profile club may be a reason to go, but he will go from being the main man to one where there will be others waiting in the wings if his form dips whereas at Town he's No.1 and in truth he hasn't achieved that much yet. He's had half a season and scored eight goals. If he scores another ten by the seasons end not only will he have proved himself but added a few million more on to his price tag.

That would explain why we're paying him well over the odds for a club in the bottom half of the league.

“Well over the odds”? I’d say we’re clearly paying him what he’s worth, which happens to be a hell of a lot. We have currently one of the very best young coaches in European football.
Taking the majority of the squad in to the Premier League from league One, enhancing with some incredible young talent and having us very much in with a chance of survival is quite outstanding.

Previous seasons are irrelevant (he will have been rewarded for that success under his contract at the time) to his current salary he is being paid to manage in the Premier League where at the moment it's over the odds for a team in a relegation position. Fortunately for him Brighton wanted him in the summer so he got a big increase from us to stay. Onus on him to prove he's worth the salary with results on the pitch, position in the league and player development. By the end of the season he may have done that. I hope he does.

Veni Vidi Participatur. Now we can get back to competing.
