Chelsea have made a second approach for Delap this window.... 14:34 - Jan 14 with 9493 viewsitfcjoe

..but Delap isn't keen on the move now

According to Simon Phillips on his Substack, who generally seems pretty fair, reliable and decently connected

Well he looks not to fancy Chelsea, just got to hope Arsenal or Liverpool don’t come calling then. This isn’t finished this window unfortunately, I think.

We know Delap isn’t keen to go anywhere and we know we’re not going to nor do we need to sell. Any club approaching us knowing it’ll mean certain relegation are beyond stupid.

It's Chelsea.

But it is now with the PSR rules. There is no doubt that these players will be seen as investments in order to fund us sustaining premier league football.

Or bridging that gap to become an established Prem club whilst maybe seeing a relegation or two.

How is that not tapping up?

I think that is what we are doing now.

We won't be 'banking' on that money for PSR at all.

He could get injured and that would scupper everything.

We're much better run than that as a business.

He'd be mad to go - and I don't think he will. Here he's well looked after, the darling of the club, has a brilliant coach and will surely be breaking into the England squad if he continues his current form and progress.

He leaves and he gets heaps of pressure on him and all that goes with that.

For his career, surely longer here has to be best. I hope he's got good advisors if a point comes where he has to make a decision.

We won't in January. What is too good to refuse this month? It would have to start at the cost of relegation which is over £100m.

Has anyone updated the Pinkun as they have a whole thread devoted to Delap and are clearly very worried about the lad and where he may go. I am sure they would be relieved to know he is staying put

If England is a motivating factor then he's better off leaving sadly. He would only have to score 2 or 3 for Chelsea and he would probably find himself ahead of Watkins and Solanke, such is England's selection predictability.

I’m not really sure Chelseas style of play would benefit Delap’s style of play.
I also thought he wanted game time which he didn’t think he would get at City
At least at Town he knows he’s the starter.
Providing he avoids injuries and who knows where they can occur , I can’t see him losing value, in terms of income so why jump now?
His family knows a think or two about football.

We might get into "offers too good to refuse" territory, as well.

Would be interesting as to where the figure is £80-100m can’t imagine being below that, with the cost of relegation.

Should we stay in the Prem, Delap might even want to stay longer, if he is comfortable, enjoying the environment and wants to see how he and the team develop further.

As romantic as that sounds, it’s not happening.

Treble his wage, possible champs league football, playing with players a couple of levels above ours. (Albeit we did beat them!)

Agreed. Its nice to think he might stay because he's doing well and enjoying his football, and I dare say he is, but the reality is if an Arsenal or Chelsea come sniffing then it would be a very hard move for him to say no to.

FWIW I think he’ll end up at Arsenal or Man Utd.

Or getting just the one shot at making it before they buy someone else. Being stuck on the bench if that happens.

Delap hopefully has a long career ahead of him. Would he risk stalling early by jumping too soon?

I was also thinking somewhat Chelsea-specific. They seem to rather buy in bulk and don't always do best for their young prospects. It would be a waste for Delap to be loaned back to the Championship now. Other top end clubs might perhaps be better places for him to go.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

It might. Top-end clubs are equally desperate to get into Europe as we are to avoid the drop.

His career is firing up. He’s young, has a good coach and is first name on the team sheet. I cannot see him leaving before the seasons end. He’s even seen what second fiddle at the country’s biggest club financially and opportunity wise looks like.

If we do let him go, we’ve settled for relegation and I doubt McKenna will be around for long either. So for the player and the club, I can’t see the sense in it.

It’s a mad circus though, so who knows.

Edit: the other element is if you were to let him go, who would you replace him with in two weeks? You can bet it wouldn’t be cheap or strengthen the team so there’s no point - unless Delap forces it.

I'm confident he isn't going this window. He is happy, guaranteed a start and learning and progressing under McKenna. If we stay up I'd even suggest he may not go in the summer if we don't need to sell - if McKenna stays he way well decide he is the best coach to spend his early years learning under.

The lure of learning under Kmc cannot be underestimated.
His all round ability to man manage and improve already good players is something special.
We really must enjoy every day we have him at the helm.

That would explain why we're paying him well over the odds for a club in the bottom half of the league.

How much do we get for staying in the Prem? £150m +? That’s how much Delap is realistically worth to us an no-one is paying that.

Im not sure speaking to an agent constitutes an approach.

But i guess thats what does on. Allows direct contact with the player effectively.

Not surprised delap can wait until Summer plus he seems the sort of guy who would want to leave knowing it was job done or at least he had played his part.

Theres never been a more nailed on departure though. Be amazed if we kept him in the Summer.

Given his importance in that potentially keeping us up scenario, you would think any offer would have to be absolutely ludicrous to let him go right now.

The best (realistic) scenario for us is probably that he bangs a few more goals in between now and May, helps keep us up, and then a bidding war ensues in the summer and we milk it for a bumper price, and with enough of the transfer window left to reinvest the funds across the side.

Or, he scores the goals to keep us up, picks up an injury against West Ham and everybody is frightened off. We offer him an improved offer and he stays for a few more seasons.

Poll: New hobby suggestions for NeedhamChris.
