Haven't seen this discussed on here as yet.

Keen to hear what any resident tech bods might think about this?

I'm sceptical that they created this for just $5m and didn't have access to Nvidia's high end chips in the process.

But broadly speaking, this does have the potential to be an absolute game changer in AI given it's all open source.

From the various talking heads on Bloomberg in the last 24 hours, some clarity on cost and access to NVDA chips;

1) Yes, this particular model/node or whatever you want to call it could well have only cost ~$5m, however, that doesn't include the other RnD costs that got them to this point in the first place. So the true cost is likely multiples of what is quoted, albeit still cheaper than many people may have originally thought.

2) NVDA got around export controls by making very slight tweaks to their higher end chips, so they weren't covered by the export ban. Meaning, the chips that went into this model were probably only about 5% different to the latest, very sophisticated chips, that Amazon and Meta et al are buying.

This makes a lot more sense now.

In reality though you're looking for a something it can't do well - you can do that with any IT system. I've never searched using traditional search engines for an image of someone writing with their left hand because it's incredibly niche.

AI a targeted tool, probably more towards the expert system than AI definition it's actually very good at things like analysing X-Rays. Tests thus far have shown it's actually much better than humans. It's also very good at things like protein folding which is incredibly difficult using traditional algorithms.

It's not a panacea but it's going to be very useful in some fields.

I use ai to write macros I simply would never have been able to do myself. It's programmatic potential is startling.

I'm being a bit cheeky. Its ability to sense when it's wrong or to display judgment will be very difficult to improve imo as under the bonnet it's just a brilliant predictive language model.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I downloaded it last night out of curiosity, I asked it one question. "Tell me about Ipswich Town FC" and the info it gave me was out of date. It said we were in the championship!

"A+++++", "Great Comms, would recommend", "Thank you, the 12 inch black mamba is just perfect" - Ebay.

Problem is that it's not looking up the current data, just previous training data which will probably have been from last year.

My favourite was it telling me about the legendary player "Frank Sinatra" who was known as the "King of Portman Road"
