About to oversee another transfer window where we fail to land our centre forward target?
Becoming a pattern if so.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I think we’ve signed the following strikers in the last transfer windows:

Delap
————
Moore
Ali
————-
Hirst
—————
Hirst

That’s not a terrible record, is it?

But we have chased strikers in the summer and failed to get them.

In summer of 2022 it was Hirst and we ended up with a panic buy in Ahadme. Managed to get Hirst in the January of 23.

In summer 2023 we were looking for a third striker alongside Hirst and Ladapo. Failed again with a panic lon of Scarlet. Ladapo wasn't up to it, Scarlet went back and Hirst got injured.

This summer we made several bids for the Greek lad then moved on to Broja, got brother and have been flogging Delap. Had no options when Hirst was injured.

Can't help but feel we'd be a few points better off and further up the table if we had gotten another striker in the summer.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Good post, some actual facts properly structured as opposed to emotional kneejerk reactions in the thread..

MA has been absolutely terrific and it's a very tough transfer market being a newly promoted team. I can't help feel some outside the box solutions, free transfers or foreign players could have given us some X factor.

If he only goes after what KM wants it actually puts us in a tricky situation if they don't want to come here. MA is Chairman and CEO though I wish he had a sporting director role where he has the ability to provide players for the squad if he deemed them to be opportunities - after all surely KM can mould or instruct any player with his fantastic coaching?

We would have been, sure of it.
Had we been bringing on a player with something about them, even someone at championship quality, instead of (yes I’m saying it again) AAH, there every chance we nick a goal here or there. But with him out there, anyone with half a brain could see the game was over for us.

We’ll be good again... one day

Thought Delap was a decent signing!! No point signing someone who will not improve the team.

A panic buy at Ahadme's price point was worth a punt. A panic buy at north of £10m would not be worth it, especially given that Ashton and McKenna have given us Delap, a player who is seriously talked about as the next Kane or Haaland. having signed him (on a permanent of course), it's always going to be hard to bring in someone who has a high enough chance of improving the squad.

It was the right call to hold fire on Broja, and if there are no deals to be done which would improve the squad, at a price that will not screw us on PSR, then holding off again is (regrettably) the right call.
