Should add right upfront that Muric is far from our only problem. He’s a factor in why we’ll likely be relegated but certainly not the only reason.

That said, he’s currently one of the most expensive mistakes we’ve ever made. Errors every game, confidence shot, fans turning on him. So what made us pay 9million pounds for a keeper known to be erratic and error-prone who’d just been relegated with Burnley?

Enter the data experts of Goalkeeper.com. So impressed were ITFC with their analytics we entered into a multi-year agreement with them.

John Harrison PhD is the Head of Data Science at goalkeeper.com. LinkedIn says he went to Wakefield Grammar School and then on to Cambridge University where he got his PhD in Astronomy. From there he went to Tesco as a Data Analyst. Then set himself up as a Freelance Goalkeeping Analyst. As far as a quick online search can show, Harrison never played football at any professional level.

The use of data analytics to gain an advantage makes sense, especially for a newly promoted club trying to gain even the tiniest of margins. If we assume the club’s agreement with goalkeeper.com is at least a six-figure sum it’s a good investment if it helps secure an extra point or two. If being a big word there, of course; the evidence before our eyes every week suggests we’ve been had. We’ll never know because it’s proprietary information but exactly what data points were used to say Muric is a good goalkeeper let alone a good fit for us?

Or to put it another way, what did the data see that an old-fashioned scout in the stands wouldn’t have seen? Why did we rely on analysis from a guy whose only professional job was in retail and who’s never worked in football?

You would assume it's very complex but end of last season a few basic stats show he was very very good compared to his peers.

Skim reading the OP, I initially thought it said Harrison went to Tesco as a delivery driver.

Perhaps goalkeeper.com couldn't have done any worse if he had done that.

I don't think there would have been much scouting of him realistically we were not expecting to be promoted.

So stats based; the caveat with that is that stats can be a little misleading, especially for goalkeepers. Save percentage can be excellent, but the saves can be saves a keeper would be expected to make.

I think if we'd have sent someone to watch him over numerous games then alarm bells would be ringing.

I genuinely don't think we'd have been worse off with Hladky, the keeper that played every game last season in a team that got automatic promotion.

Muric has now got the yips, the fans know, so it intensifies the yips and the circle continues.

Lot of this absolute tosh. Get proper football people to go out and watch a few games. All the high block low block
Utter nonsense. Lots of ways to skin a rabbit. Managers are so one dimensional including ours I'm afraid.

You've missed out the word "woke" from your second paragraph - should be the second word I think.

“He gets on base…”

Only thing I can compare it to is Jonah Hill’s character in MoneyBall (who actually didn’t exist).

We were top four pretty much the whole season; why wouldn’t we have been expecting or planning for promotion?

That aside, we don’t know exactly when Hladky would have made it known he wouldn’t stick around.

Bobby Robson famously said “only sign players you have personally seen play”

You use of the word "woke" suggests you think data analysis favours players from diverse backgrounds.

xG levels that out.
