The Lost Football Grounds fb page 17:41 - Feb 17 with 2039 views | Illinoisblue | Has some Portman Road pics up today that I’ve never seen; one of the Cobbold Stand being built with the old cattle market visible in the foreground . And one of the old West Stand, I think.

I didn't normally stand there, but there was a league cup game against Stoke in around 1972 which had a capacity crowd and I got into the East Stand just before they closed the turnstiles because the ground was full. It's now at Foxhall Stadium [Post edited 17 Feb 17:54]

Is that the one which ended up at Foxhall Stadium, then got blown down/away?

It did (I subsequently amended my post) but I didn't realise it was no longer there. [Post edited 17 Feb 17:58]

It hasn’t been at Foxhall for over 30 years. The Hurricane in 1987 took half of it down and the other half was condemned following the Bradford Fire due to its wooden construction. The stands at Foxhall now are from the 2012 Olympics.

Was it moved out of town or just closed down? Surprised the Tractor Boys name didn't come earlier with that there.

Me and my Dad sat in that. Just North of the half way line in the front row.

That cattle market was our happy place in the 60s during school holidays , walking round there on our way to Alderman Rd park , as we lived in curriers lane , also used to go and watch town training on what is now the fan zone …..happy days it set the tone for watching Town since 1968 . | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yes, the Chicken Run was put up in the early 20c on what was a bit of waste ground attached to the original cricket ground. It was leased to a farmer who ran chickens under it during the summer. I remember it from early games (as an old git) but never went in it. My father sat in the Chicken Run for his first game in the late 30s. The Portman Stand was kind of prefabricated as can be seen in the picture. It was a good achievement to get it open for the new season. The lower section from where the exec boxes are to the pitch was standing and it was decent terracing offering a good view. The stand was about two thirds the length of the current one, the ends being added by early 1975. I last sat in the Portman/Cobbold stand about five years ago. I was amazed how little space there was within it and the seating. It didn’t feel that way back in the day not least because people were smaller! It really was state o& the art in the 70s and made the ground look very smart at the time.

That’s the year Stoke beat Chelsea in the final, yes? The League Cup was never more important than then. I know three Stoke fans, none of them from anywhere near Staffordshire, (Colchester, Lancaster and Norway respectively) and they’re all around 60 and it was the League Cup that did it.

I think the game was the following season but Stoke would have been the reigning champions. And you're right about its popularity. Full capacity at Portman Road was rare in those days, and I tracked down the tie to 3 October 1972, which must have been a relatively early round. [Post edited 17 Feb 21:55]
