It’s the right-hand side that’s killed us this season 17:57 - Feb 22 with 1570 viewsITFC_84

Obviously there are other factors, but when you reel it off it’s clear why so many teams have so much joy down our right.

Ogbene out for season.
Tuanzebe freak injury.
Clarke sent off.
Burns out for the season.
Tuanzebe injury.
Godfrey played out of position/not up to it.
Philogene a shadow of the Hull player.
Tuanzebe sent off.

Have I missed anything? To go through the last 2 years with little no injuries, to then see what’s happened to the whole of our right hand side. It’s unbelievable.

Some might also add, we’ve recruited really poorly in this area of the pitch.

Clarke was never going to be the solution, problem is it's looking like Godfrey or Johnson aren't either. I'm still not sure what their best positions could be but it's definitely not rb. The OP makes a good summary though of our right sided issues this season.

I find it criminal we’ve invested the best part of £150m in our squad yet at RB we’ve signed a free agent who the manager clearly doesn’t fancy and someone on loan from Atalanta who couldn’t get a game there and isn’t even really a RB anyway.

Recruited players in all the wrong places imo. We lack a decent RB and CM. Who, oh why we didn’t recruited properly there (instead of multiple no.10s), I’ll never know.

I agree. I'm not sure either Johnson or Godfrey are natural right backs but I guess that just compounds the issue we haven't signed anyone who is a natural right back. Just like Townsend is but on the left.

Strange one isn't it. We seem fixated on no 10s when the need is greater in midfield

I don't think KM has ever truly been happy with the RB/RBW position. He's had a number of players rotate in and out of it over his time here.

Mick Mills yesterday was saying that he thought Clarke was our best right back in the sense that he was a better defender than Davis (although not quite so good going forward) and much better at going forward than Tuenzebe and Godfrey.

Yes, the way the right back is instructed to play so far inside leaving acres of room down that side. Every single game it happens apart from when Axel plays . The whole team seems to move across to cover Davis and leaves us very vulnerable, we got away with it last season but no this.

We didn’t entirely get away with it last season though, Leeds , Southampton, Cardiff, Sunderland all exploited it, jack clarke scored for Sunderland from that position, it shouldn’t take 2 years to sort it out at any level, but we’re not allowed to question the manager are we!

Yes/No. Burns and Ogbene are better at helping provide support to the RB. But yesterday, you had a wonderful long pass from Gray to Son which opened up the space, but we should still have enough players back to stop both first goals. Watching the highlights for that 2nd goal Johnson is standing there waiting for what looks like 10 seconds with nobody marking him.
Yes we need to cut out the balls coming in, but for all the defenders to follow the movement of Son rather than look around them is simply poor defending by the entire back line/team.

Like all fans we're always looking for a single silver bullet solution. 'Drop Muric that's we need to do', but we still conceded 4 yesterday. 'If only we had Axel, we stop those goals' but he played against Southampton and still their goals came from down our right.

We simply aren't playing as a team, with players taking responsibility. After the first goal, why isn't someone in the team taking responsibility to identify Johnson is standing in our box for 10 seconds unmarked?

Now I still think we'll survive (just) but the pressure is causing the confidence to drain. As I've said on previous posts, it's looking more & more like a mirror of Burnley last season. Players trying, not giving up, talking of fine margins, but ultimately their results didn't improve.

I agree with much of what you said until your last paragraph.

There is not a hope in hell of us surviving, look at Wolves next two months of fixtures, when the beat us at PR we'll be ten points behind them. Bookmark this and please prove me wrong.
