The money we have spent 13:53 - Feb 27 with 1104 viewsLinners

Was clearly not spent to prevent relegation, it was spent to bolster the club generally. If your only ambition was to stay up then you'd go and buy/get seasoned professionals, pay them stupid wages and recognise that they'll all be gone if you go down. That's not what we've done, we've bought players to help the club continue to grow. We might not have got all those right of course, but that's another debate.

Yeh I do actually think long term the transfer business will be good for us. Should leave us less to do in the summer this year and then makes us a good championship team next season.

The hope is you get promoted back to the Premier League and then you maybe add 4/5 players who fit the more, Prem Proven mould instead of 13/14, most learning the league at the same time.

Players develop at different rates. Just because Clarke, Greaves, Omari haven't had great prem seasons now. doesn't mean they can't get there in the future.

Patience is the Key.

"pay stupid wages" in the hope we stay up??? Then no other club will take that player on so you are stuck with him, not a great idea. Good way to bankrupt and finish a football club as well.

I think it was a bit of both.

Hope that they gel / develop enough to keep us up, but with future proofing in terms of some being sold for a profit and others to stay with us in the championship.

Not many teams go down the QPR route these days.

Well, I think it's more accurate to say it was done knowing that if we were relegated then we were well set up for the next couple of seasons.

I don't think it's quite right to say they were bought with no intention of trying to stay up - we would still be much better off doing so.

Agreed. But staying up (or not) shouldn't be the only way to judge the spend, that was my point.

You normally apply contingencies in to the contracts to be honest.

You will normally add a 30%-50% cut on the wage if you are relegated, and reversed when you are promoted.

That's pretty standard - suspect will be the case in KMc hefty contract as well.

A tasty profit on Delap, plus parachute payments. If we can keep most of the others, we'll have a great squad in the Championship.

Indeed, not should players like Jack Clarke and even Philogene be judged only on this season.
