World War 3 08:44 - Mar 1 with 8130 viewsonceablue

Trump has received a lot of criticism on this page in the last 24 hours and rightly so

However him so called cosying up with Putin at least puts a hold on World War 3 in the short term

If Trump and Putin hated each other the World would be over

Perceptions are everything in international affairs. Putin's viewpoint is driving policy, not an objective truth.

I've travelled enough in the old Soviet Bloc to know how much they are concerned about Russian expansionism and why they joined NATO. I'm not suggesting they didn't have the right to. But we can't ignore Putin's world-view in predicting how he will act.

I don't thing Russia is in a position for much military adventurism in the immediate future. Their armed forces have taken a battering in Ukraine. I don't think Putin would have launched that invasion had he known it would turn into a long-drawn-out attritional slog, rather than a quick and easy coup de main.

Their entire economy is on a war-footing, much is currently geared towards warfare. Their economy, though damaged, did not collapse as we hoped, they still have significant foreign income from minerals, oil and gas. Give them 3 years to re-equip, re-enlist and rearm they could be in a position to threaten again. Whether the appetite will still be there, who knows.

He won’t use nuclear. Putin’s an utter coward. He bluffed three years ago and Europe’s leaders promptly messed the bed which emboldened the dictator further. If people in Russia truly believed the U.K. and or France were actually prepared to retaliate, they’d get rid of Putin in a minute if he threatened that. Nobody is keen on dying, even if they are, in the case of Putin and best most revered mate Trump, happy to see other people die.

Trump mentions he just wants peace a lot. He clearly doesn’t. People being killed? He doesn’t care. If he did he’d get the numbers right at the very least. The dead are just currency to him.

He wants the loot. It’s all that matters. If he’d wanted the war to end, he’d have pressured Putin to end it. Financially and militarily after three years, Russia isn’t in the best place. But Trump sees more booty in supporting Putin than stopping him. It’s as simple as that.

What amazes me if that Trump and Musk get so much global daily media attention and yet they have achieved absolutely nothing so far. It looks like elected Presidential powers are now controlled by lawyers in court rooms. Think about it all….

JFK papers not released and can be blocked
Ukraine peace deal in 1 day - not happening full stop.
USAID corruption - temporary stopped for three months.
US social benefit corruption - stopped by courts. Payouts must continue as normal
Tariffs - over hyped American sales tax. Americans are paying the higher tariffs, but other than Steel no other country or commodity has been impacted.
Panama, Greenland, Mexico, Canada - all words ….nothing changed
Fort Knox Gold - Trump hasn’t had time to drive around and look !!

In the words of Billy Bragg we are waiting for the great leap forwards.

I think he and his undemocratic posse of grifters could get bound up in litigation and all the enemies they seem so keen to create.

They have an air of invincibility about them. I get most of America is in his thrall, but how long will he keep that and will he be able to crush dissenting voices before they crush him? It needs far cleverer people than me with a good knowledge of how US constitution and legal system works to answer that.

Happily there are still some checks and balances against autocractic lunacy.

That is a good thing.

I don't think America is in his thrall, I am in Panama at the moment and within my first day fell into conversation with four Americans (although one started his life in Newham) and none were Trump supporters. Quite the opposite. One made the point that only 22.5% of the United States voted for Trump. My appeal really is to give any US citizens you meet a bit of space and let them talk about the problems they face rather than assuming they are happy with their President.

Poll: What was in Wes Burns' imaginary cup of tea ?

When putin invades Lithuania because he is confident that America wont intervene, then we can talk about who is gambling with ww3.

Perhaps we will then have to give him an ultimatum about invading Poland...

What will he invade Lithuania with?

He is hopelessly overstretched. Otherwise the Kursk salient would have been retaken by now. Ukraine are currently regaining ground in Kursk.

It is not realistic to suggest that Russia can open a new front at the moment. The biggest threat to the Baltic States right now is peace in Ukraine which allows Putin to shift forces. The Baltic States totally understand that, hence their disproportionate (some would say foolish) generosity in donating air defence equipment to Ukraine.

More realistically, the fall out from the Afghanistan war suggests it will be a matter of generations before the next Russian attempt at a land grab.

Meat grinder tactics work in defence of the Motherland, because every Babushka will grab a Kalashnikov, but are unsustainable in expansionist wars.

Interesting. From Newham to US to Panama! That’s some journey!

Oh I always give anyone from anywhere space to talk about the problems they face. That’s only polite, fair and you never learn anything unless you do. It’s always wise to listen. A risk with Americans especially is always the shared language. It’s easy to forget they’re as foreign as a frankfurter with different perspectives and culture.

I got to talk to a decent number of Americans in the US about Trump in their country during Trump’s last term. Most were Trump supporters, but it was ski areas and they were wealthy so didn’t trust the Democrats. One chat stays in the memory. I was with one in a bar in I think Vail and he was asking about Johnson and co so I gave it the old vitriol. I then said never mind our idiots what about Trump? He rolled his eyes, clearly had no time for him but said ‘I’m a Republican and voted for him as he won’t take my money’.

During the first election of the orange one the media were certainly in his thrall. Morning tv channels (if you could stomach them) were literally only interested in him.
