38010 13:08 - Mar 7 with 2904 views | flykickingbybgunn | On 8th March 1975 (50 Years ago on Saturday) Town hosted Leeds in the FA Cup 6th round. The attendance was a record that still stands of 38010. I was sat on the grass leaning up against the wall. You could do them sort of things then. This was the first match that eventually went to a 3rd replay which we won 3-2. Which lead on to the Semifinal where the ref disallowed two perfectly good goals for us and we lost to West Ham 2-1. Ancient history I know, but interestin ...

At the Filbert Street replay it was non stop noise. Even sang Keep right on to the end of the road at one point! Replay at Filbert Street was Town versus Clive Thomas. What a plonker. Shame because we would have won the final that year against Fulham.

The Filbert St replay was noisy - most of the crowd seemed drunk. We stood in the little side stand that night. My abiding memory of the evening was the convoy of cars, buses, vans, you name it with flags, scarves etc heading to Leicester. I’d never seen anything like it. It was very exciting. The Thursday game was more muted as the crowd was smaller. We had seats in the tiny little stand where Woods scored. That was a great night.

My memory of being right at the front of that side stand at Leicester, was just how low it was below pitch level. Probably the worst view I can remember at a match.

Nowadays, going to Leicester is a piece of p1ss. Jump in the car, head to A14 and your car will drive you all the way without having to even negotiate a roundabout. Although I wasn't old enough to drive in 1975, I am old enough to remember driving less than 10 years later when it would take forever and half the journey you spent keeping one eye on your temperature gauge and the other on a map of Great Britain. It was a true effort to get anywhere back in the day. The previous evening in the pub was spent discussing where to stop on the way to rest the vehicle. Kids these days don't know they're born....... blah de blah......moan moan moan

It was! We were towards the back of it which isn’t saying much as we were pretty much eye level to the players. It was mayhem on that little terrace. Elf and safety? Errr none of that! Still, it was a laugh. It was a strange ground. Quite large on two sides, virtually 4th division on the other two.

38010 on 13:16 - Mar 7 by Keno | I was there!! The north stand was fun, some of the crash barriers standing popping out and we got moved into the curved bit go terrace to side. I was told a while ago by some with some knowledge of these things the club reckoned there were more people in the ground that that they hadn't counted and the attendance was probably nearer 40k |
There was definitely more than the official 38010. My mate was working on one of the gates that day and the Leeds section in the North was technically full, when he was told the Leeds special train had just arrived and to expect a lot of Leeds fans would be arriving in the next 10 mins. On a positive he made a few pounds that day letting some 'additional' Leeds fans in for cash.

I think you were probably right. I went to a number of games in that period when gates were well over 30k and I never saw or felt the crowd packed anywhere near as tight as that - all over it too. It’s east to forget much of the ground was standing. The upper Portman/Cobbold was seated as was what is now the middle tier of the west stand, though that was I think a little bigger than that then. Might be wrong, but essentially, as many as you could pack in and away we go. Quite extraordinary looking back. I just thought it exciting! [Post edited 8 Mar 18:19]

I did not notice that the crowd was overly massive as I was sat in the West Stand, so did not appreciate how packed like sardines the rest of the stadium was.
