Man United to build 100k stadium 09:22 - Mar 11 with 2771 viewsMullet

Jim almost confirmed this in yesterday’s round of interviews. He’s made no secret of it, plus Burnham wants it for the economic benefits.

I do wonder if this is hubris though. There is so much wrong at the club already, he’s eventually going to run out of other people to blame too.

Personally I believe there should be a Wembley of the North. It makes little sense if you have two teams from higher up the Country making both fans and the teams travel several hundred miles. If those that are really concerned with climate change have any sense at all then they would use New Trafford as the place to have playoffs and finals for teams that would have long travel times and have to start and finish many hours before and after a match. Of course if Utd were in such a game then it would not be at New Trafford or whatever they call it.

Yeah there have been some ridiculous scenarios en route to Wembley haven’t there? I believe there was even a Derby and it caused fights at service stations etc because they couldn’t enforce the designated stops etc if I remember rightly.

I reckon that the FA will fight tooth and nail to keep all the big games at Wembley. It's their golden cash cow.

It's ridiculous that games involving 2 northern teams are still played at Wembley, given that the debt associated with building the expensive white elephant have been paid off. But I don't expect anything to change.

Have read somewhere that they've done lots of work recently to make it more hospitable for gigs, wider events etc. Hope that will negate the need to have SO many club games there.

RE public funding, I think this will only relate to elements that enhance the public offering in the area, i.e. a new tram line/station etc. Been debunked that they will 'fund' the stadium.

I live nearby and the area is desperately in need of help. There's zero reason to visit OT aside from matchday. If you look at what did City did to the area around the Etihad, this has the potential to be transformative.

However. It does look like a circus tent. If that's truly *the* design I cannot see it ageing well at all.

I guess as mentioned infrastructure for transport will be important and need to be upgraded.

You’ve also got the creep of students from where I used to live in Hulme down to OT and stretford as a reason to gentrify. Link up with Salford Quays as an area that attracts young graduates with a lot of spending power. I expect the words “new didsbury” or some version thereof to be used by the MEN in that case.

I’m not sure how many schools and colleges would be in the catchment beyond the Class of 92 university thing - but improving the education offer around there would help too. You saw a lot of money go into East Manchester and attracting in new build academies and a college as well as the sports coaching facilities. I would guess Burnham might link that to his Manchester Baccalaureate vision too.

I strongly feel the semi finals should not be held at Wembley now the debts paid off.

Winning the semi final at Highbury was one if not the best moment for me watching Town. But also Watching us lose in 1981 against Man City was one of the worst feelings I've ever felt. Getting to an FA Cup final should be made special. Winning it at neutral ground where the results matters so much, helps with that. Just my opinion of course

Impressive. It'll be second biggest in Europe to the rebuilt Camp Nou.

Missing a kop tho. Every ground needs a <insert_colour>-wall.
