Car Numberplates 19:44 - Mar 15 with 1472 viewsfootball

Hi all - after a bit of helpful advice if possible.

After being tailed for five miles this am, I was hauled over by the cops at about 9:30am. Had my keys taken off me then interrogated about where I was going, where I had been etc... I handed over my driving licence which they ran through the system (twice) and my insurance (which they tried to challenge me on) then proceeded to breathalyse me because I'd committed a motor vehicle offence.

My keys were apparently taken off me so I didn't drive away from them. I have a 1liter C1 car - not going to outrun any cop car is it!

So, completely made to feel like a criminal - what was the offence I asked - apparently my rear number plate is a slightly wrong shade of yellow (their words)! IS this such a thing as the government website only says yellow background. Looking at it, it is absolutely no different from what I can see to other plates so their eyesight must be good

Anyone know anything about colour plates? No other issues with it in terms of spacing, raised etc

The other option could be that they are budgie fans as it has the town crest on - or they have an internal joke at work about what lame reason can they haul someone over for and ruin their morning

Any intel?

No, but a valid question in fairness and I get why you ask it. Single passenger in a car.

If there is a rule, I get it, fine, will sort, but I wasnt' aware of such and can't even spot the colour difference. I would have challenged them more but thought if I did they'd find some reason to screw me over as one of me and two of them so kept quiet (which is quite unusual for me!)

Sounds like cops dont like you. Seriously though, does the car have previous owners? Sometimes if someone dodgy has had the car before you, it can have ANPR markers on it, and these often aren't removed when the car changes ownership. The number plate thing sounds like a dodgy excuse to stop you and go heavy handed on you.

Is it a “prestige” car?

If so, probably just envy.

I got pulled a few times in my C63s and Aston Martin when I lived in Ipswich.

My recent problems in life have been caused by my interaction with the government.
Universal Credit, NHS, DVLA and the rest.
I'm such an affable person (yes I am - shut it), people have made off the cuff remarks that have led me to the following conclusions.
The UK government discovered the Excel spreadsheet in the '90's and have been jerking off ever since.
If a government worker (could be a Policeman) has numbers in column A then that's baaaad. These numbers need to be moved to column B and magically that's good. Why? f**k nose.
Maybe you were in Column A when they stopped you.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Sounds to me like they were fishing.

Best bet is never to interact..I refuse to answer any questions other than providing my licence.

Worth a complaint? Wouldn't bother, they cover for each other and you'll possibly be on their horizon.

Assuming they let you go with nothing more than the line about your number plate I'd forget it. There are rules on the colour, size and letter spacing but if your car passed its MOT then you'll be sweet I'd think.

If I was you I would clean it up, take a picture, then take a picture or two of similar aged cars number plates, if a prosecution comes through send the two pictures, assuming they are very similar, plead not guilty and then they will have to decide if they proceed. Usually if a prosecution is in doubt they will not proceed with the case due to shortage of court space and time.
Did they read you your rights? I.E. anything you say will be taken down ECT?
As a side story a few years ago I was working in a police station as a contractor and two WPC's were discussing how one was short or a prosecution, the other asked what will you do? The other said "I will have to go out and find someone and issue a ticket" They then went very quiet as they must have realised I was not a policeman.
It is worth fighting this and test them as to if there is a real chance of a prosecution, they might also be one ticket short of what they need for the week/month. Good Luck, don't just give in.

I find at this time of the year with the muddy conditions it's easier to leave the numberplate covered in mud so they cannot see the shade of yellow.

Joking aside I didn't think there is particular shade of yellow, other than it's always been Canary yellow and reflective.

Although as numberplates have their own dedicated font I guess it's feasible they have their own dedicated yellow colour.

you can have the wrong shade of yellow on a rear number plate, and it may be considered illegal. In the UK, number plates must comply with BS AU 145e regulations, which specify the exact shade of reflex yellow required for rear plates. If the plate is too light, too dark, or has a non-compliant tint, it could result in an MOT failure or a fine from the police.

The Town crest on the number plate would make it illegal.

It isn’t illegal to sell such plates but it is to use them.

You can only fit number plates from authorised suppliers.

I know when they were first in use there was a particular shade of yellow but not able to check if that still applies.
