Apathy creeping in and I don’t like it one bit 10:45 - Mar 17 with 5765 viewsMatt_Netherlands

Walking through town to PR on Saturday I realised it was the first time in two and a bit years that I wasn’t excited to be watching the game. That sounds ridiculous because we’re in the premier league ffs and have been desperate to be here for quite literally decades. But part of me, just wants the season over and done with so we can look forward to some wins and seeing our young squad develop more and grow next season.

It’s a strange (and rubbish) feeling, but then football is a strange old game.

I’ll probably get a shed of downvotes for saying I feel apathetic, but I know I’m not the only one. And no I didnt leave at HT on Saturday like a good number of others did! Still, I’d much rather feel apathetic in the premier league than in mid table league one!!

Onwards and upwards.

We noticed there was an atmosphere of that in general in Saturday, the way we went 3-0 down and the crowd mustered barely a murmur, and the theatrics of Forest's resident diver got more out of the crowd than much of what the game did besides the goals. The players are expecting to lose, and now the majority us know we're going to lose it's just waiting for the confirmation for most. A far cry from Ashton's war-cry a few weeks back, we have gone down with a whimper and we won't muster 30 points this season.

An East Anglian Town overtaken by Londoners

It's really credit to fans that they have got this far through a pretty poor season turning up in their thousands, trying to believe that the tide will turn and are only now thinking it's more than likely we will be in the Championship next season. Yes a few of the natives have been restless for a few weeks now both questioning the ability of the manager and whether certain players are worth their place in the squad. But we all grumble when things aren't going our way. I for instance really questioned my ability with regards to horse racing this past week. I only managed one winner in four days. Possibly my worst Cheltenham ever. Then with little enthusiasm for Saturdays racing I picked the winner and a placed horse over 4 miles 2 furlongs and followed up with a 13/2 winner. In so doing turned a poor week into a half decent one. So whilst we are all feeling a bit down about our beloved Town we should reflect on where we were during the Marcus Evans era where the high points were that our turnstiles got painted and we had a succession of managers that were boring, rude or just plain useless.

The apathy for me kicked in when the first goal went in on Saturday. I wonder if the same happened with the players, and that's why we then had that ten minute nightmare.

I was watching the match from home with a mighty delay and the goal notifications were coming in faster than the video of the previous goal.

I think I was pretty angry at 3-0 if I'm being honest. This season has been so relentlessly disappointing but genuinely looking forward to the next.

Nervous about the Wolves match even if we're down.

To be honest (and I've only missed two games home and away), I haven't felt as excited at games as I thought I might, even the opening game with Liverpool.

I suppose it's a combination of growing up watching Ipswich in the First Division, cynicism about the Premier League, a certain tension at home which affects the atmosphere, and rather soulless away grounds.

But a bright spot has been the atmosphere created by our away fans.

Not surprising apathy is beginning to creep in when many players show the same level of apathy on the pitch. The thing that pi$ses me off most is the feeling that certain players are just going through the motions with the idgaf attitude, especially the new signings who were not part of the back-to-back promotion squad. Look at the body language of Phillips for example, it is clear his heart is already at Leeds even though he may still be physically be here. Philogene, Enciso, even Delap didn't look too bothered at all as well on Saturday.

The again, it could be even worse than just apathy. The back to back promotion fairytale have perhaps helped out in keeping PR full at the final whistle and prevented all out abuse at the players and staff every matchday. Just watch the FT scenes at St Mary's and King Power. There are sections of fans shouting f off and gesturing to their own players and booing throughout. Or even at Molineux, London Stadium etc. when they lose even though they're already more or less safe.
