I don’t see why Wes can’t hop down the wing. They even gave him crutches, so he’s got no excuse!

It’s just easier for people to blame things like this than accept the fact we are not good enough compared to established PL teams. Considering the injuries, suspensions I don’t think we are any worse than other PL teams. What is interesting is that looking at transfermkt, our most valuable starting line up was against Forest at £178m, which ranks only 18th against all other clubs and matches this season, however our most valuable bench was only £78m, which is bottom by quite a way. I know it’s not an exact science but makes an interesting comparison. The simple truth is that we do not have the depth of quality of other teams.

"It’s just easier for people to blame things like this than accept the fact we are not good enough compared to established PL teams." Or maybe, just maybe, it's a combination of both. As of mid January we were third in the number of days lost to injury, and we have been in the top 3 all season - way ahead of those team in the lower half of the table. At that point we'd lost nearly 700 days (which will have increased significantly over the past 10 weeks), and the team that has lost least (West Ham) were only on 280. Your point about value (on the field and bench) is spot on, and also consider that with the (lack of) depth to our squad, we are hit even harder when we are losing more player days through injury. This is the gulf we need to overcome, and this season we have fallen short, not helped by how many injuries we've suffered.

The truth is if Muric was the problem (which seems to be the consensus) why wasn't he dropped early on for Walton? Why have form players like Wolfenden been dropped in favour of poorer-performing new signings? Or in Townsend's case, what else can he do to get himself a start? We persisted with playing expensive new players, who aren't delivering, even when others were fit and that's a factor in our sub-30points season. Whoever has made that call has hurt us as much as any injury spree. Also a January window that included Godfrey and Enciso. To try and stay up... Probably the most Marcus Evans thing we've had since he sold up. Next season there will be change, Cajuste and Phillips gone, Delap gone, and that's just for starters. Morsy and Mass are probably too old for another Championship campaign, at least as starters. Walton, Axel T, Burns, and Chaplin have had injuries over the past few seasons and will probably be moved on too. That leaves us with a chunk of players who didn't get promoted with West Brom, Sunderland, Blackburn, and Hull. We need to get next summer's recruitment absolutely right, cut our losses with a few of these expensive signings, and start again.

This constant banging on about Woolfenden and others being dropped in favour of “poorer performing” new signings is getting boring, Greaves has only played 4 more games than Woolfenden. I think O’Shea has been our best defender and is obviously McKennas choice of leader to replace Morsy but again that’s my view, others will have different ones. Playing Townsend is another difficult choice as it changes our playing style from the last 2 years. Our defence hasn’t been good enough, both from our promotion squad and the signings, the singling out of the new players in isolation is harsh, just because they come with a price tag. I also don’t think Muric was to blame in isolation either, he made some mistakes but also made a hell of a lot of saves to keep us in games. Trouble is, once parts of the fan base got on his back that was it. The loss of Ogbene was huge, having just come off a season of prem footy, basically blew McKenna’s plan for the rhs out of the water. Losing Chaplin, Szmodiczs, Burns for extended periods has also hurt. As for your last point, isn’t building a promotion winning squad from parts of other teams who didn’t get promoted exactly how McKenna got as our last two promotions? The whole being greater than the sum of the parts and all that. [Post edited 20 Mar 17:42]

Agree - the squad we have now is much closer to being capable in the premier league than the one we came up with. It’s not time to throw the baby out with the bath water and talk of cutting our losses on expensive signings just is wildly off the mark. We need to replace Delap and refresh central midfield and beyond that just look at replacing anyone else we sell and if we do sell only do so for fees that make the sale worth it for us.
