is being a reasonably solid Championship defender for most of his career much of a failure really? It's still a fairly high level to be playing, it you were that level in an equivalent industry you'd be doing alright presumably

Agree with your push back but I'd go further. It's not 'fairly high". It's a very high level. An awful lot of international footballers at champ level.

Apart from maybe 4-5 other European countries the championship would be top flight or above level for the rest.

The amount of people that make it to that level is absolutely tiny. If course he's earnt a lot from a top career.

In a world in which people with relatively ordinary jobs often live in houses that are worth around half a million (sometimes more), I'm genuinely puzzled as to what kind of house some posters thought a professional footballer who spent the vast majority of his career in the Championship and was sensible with his money would be living in.
