Club World Cup 20:03 - Mar 26 with 3072 viewsberkstractorboy

Just read on BBC that City and Chelsea could earn upto £97M each from the Club World Cup this summer. It's nuts and with PSR it just makes the playing field even more uneven between clubs in the PL let alone between the Prem and Championship.

They need to look at this and say any winnings can't be used as profit in the PSR calculations or something along those lines as the reality is the club world cup is really only achievable by very few in UK who are already very wealthy.

I know what I propose may not be totally right but it's the principle behind it that I think is important to contain the increasing gulf in clubs finances.

I don't think it needs fewer competitions, it just needs to have sensible inclusions.

The Champions League should be the previous holders plus the domestic winners of European leagues only, and where the holder also wins their domestic league, 2nd place from that league qualifies. Simples.

Europa League should be the 2nd and 3rd placed teams from European domestic leagues.

Conference dropped.

I see where you’re coming from but realistically too many clubs are heavily dependent on incoming deriving from the various European competitions.

I do think however that there are too many matches which are seen as pointless or just not interestingly enough to watch. I don’t think that I’m the only one who only watches the Champions League when it enters the knockout phrase (the interesting part).

I favour amalgamating all three UEFA competitions - the lower ranked teams entering in the prequalifying rounds with one-off matches. And then the proper big boys enter on the third round with one-legged matches. When it gets to the quarter-finals, two legged ties can be introduced.

Think the above will add some much needed instant jeopardy into the mix straight away. Just need to sort out the prize money issues.

Clearly Saudi money behind it. Disrupting sports again.

According to the latest Guardian Football Weekly there was no broadcaster signed up to cover the tournament. Then, out of nowhere DAZN decided they'd pay $1 billion for the rights. And then, entirely coincidentally, DAZN were the beneficiaries of $1 billion inward investment from, surprise surprise, the Saudis.

Apparently, DAZN sold a minority stake to Saudi Arabia's Surj Sports Investment for $1 billion.

Slimmed down UEFA club competitions would be welcome, IMO, but never going to happen while the big European clubs have that threat of leaving UEFA & forming their own league. Jeopardy doesn't work well in the modern football world of mega-millions financing.

A steaming heap of bovine excrement of a competition which I shall be avoiding entirely.

Was that before or after FIFA decided to award the 2034 WC to the Saudis. Now I’m not saying that it’s all corrupt …but

There are 18 other clubs who don't get the money, so the gap between PL and Championship isn't effected by this.
