So I'll just ask this...

If or when any release clauses are activated, that doesn't necessarily mean that's all we get does it?

Wouldn't we also have some kind of 'sell-on clause' inserted in the deal for him to move on, so if he then sells at a later point for a lot more, we still get a decent percentage of any further profitable deals? Could that be the kind of 'very very well protected' deal that Ashton refers to?

Depends what the terms of the release clause is.

Normally if they are straight clauses, if anyone bids £30m we have to accept it automatically and cannot insist there are clauses put in of our own on any outgoing transfer, since the purchaser has already agreed to paid the amount of money in the release clause so we cannot ask for any more, directly or indirectly.

I did wonder that. "You can have him for £30m (plus £1) but our sell-on has to be 25%..."

You'd hope so...

But remember what happened when Arsenal bid £40m (the release clause) plus £1 to Liverpool for Suarez. Liverpool said it was ridiculous and ignored it!

Agreed. As I posted in the other thread, everyone is focusing on one (potential) clause in the contract. It is unlikely to sit in isolation. Maybe it does - but these days football contracts are usually pretty intricate, designed to get as much future protection in as possible for both clubs.

The club lawyers are paid large sums of money agreeing these contracts, and they normally take days if not weeks to finalise. We've seen some of our incoming player confirmations delayed whilst the contracts were being sorted, and previous contract links being unpicked.

The truth is, we have no chance of knowing the detail until he's sold, and even then it will just be what both clubs agree to publicise.

Again speculation on top of speculation but you'd think that it would be stipulated in the contract at the time of signing, so wouldn't have to be a negotiation after accepting. Also don't a lot of these clauses have to be paid in full or can be refused, so there will be more to it than simply ticking the £30 million box almost certainly.

Think that was because the release clause was made up by the agent trying to get him a move.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
