But they now have a generation of fans who were born after that clubs formation and don’t care at all about how they were formed. The franchise FC ship has sailed. [Post edited 3 May 20:33]

not sure sailing is the right word, sinking may be more appropriate

If I happened to have lots and lots of cash, liked football but didn’t really support a club, I’d invest in MK Dons. A great stadium, a lot of potential and a sort of blank canvass as well. Change the kit to purple, design a much better badge and I’ll oversea footballing success.

Not amusing enough. Why should they be there, even 19th in L2, ahead of the likes of Bury FC?

The consequences of the Hillsborough disaster meant that Plough Lane was unviable as a home ground, they could not get permission to build another ground locally. Sam Hamam was hawking the club out to all and sundry, at one point it was muted that they would move it to Dublin of all places and the club ended up looking at grounds outside London but nothing came off. The norwegians turned out not to have deep enough pockets to sort it out. Milton Keynes had a stadium and in Pete Winkleman and willing backer. So far as I recall there wereno other options available. Heaven knows what would have happened if they had not moved to MK, probably just gone out of business.

Many clubs go out of business due to bad leadership - big ones include Rangers, Bolton etc but they start again from the bottom. Wimbledon fans would have lived with that - they started again anyway. If Winkleman had funded a smaller local club, it would have taken a few years but they would be in a far better position than they are now. I don’t expect that they’ll still be around in 5 or 6 years time, certainly not as a league team. [Post edited 4 May 13:05]

MK Dons might well spend a few seasons in L2 but I doubt that they’ll go out of business. And I doubt that they’ll slide into non-league football. Potentially MK have a big catchment area to draw support from but it takes at least three generations to build up that support.

I’m not sure why that is worth remembering really. Who has replaced MK now in Europe as that location and should we move someone else’s football team to their town as well?

MK Dons get a bad rap because they have tried to usurp a different team's history.

I don’t see anyone being a happy victim - pretty sure that Wimbledon fans would have preferred none of this to happen. I certainly wouldn’t expect Wimbledon to be Kingstonians benefactor - or any club for that matter. Kingstonians couldn’t afford their ground and lost it. Happens all the time in non-league football. Most recently in Basingstoke & Poole (near me anyway). That’s a bit different from relocating an established league club to a different part of the country.
