If like me you were fuming after Saturdays game ... 10:15 - Apr 28 with 2387 views | urbanblue | .. this'll raise the blood pressure again. I made the mistake of reading this when the algorithm sent it my way. To sum up ... Burn won the ball. Palmer wasn't fouled and should have been a goal. Was a definite penalty and the VAR check was ridiculous. That we claimed a foul for the third goal was also ridiculous. Although he doesn't actually say it intimates that Morsey should have been sent off. No bias here of course .. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/other/the-newcastle-united-fans-split-pretty-much

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. In simple terms, he was impeded but I also think he should have cleaned out the ball and player...but then I grew up in the 1980s.

In what way was he impeded? The forward had a right to stand there, which is all he did.

He knows exactly what he's doing, even turning his back to protect himself against the impact. It's soft, absolutely, but I'd expect it given 95 times out of 100.
If like me you were fuming after Saturdays game ... on 11:41 - Apr 28 with 1825 views | HighgateBlue | Many Newcastle fans are biased, even when they think they're being objective. Many Ipswich fans are biased, even when they think they're being objective. Those fans who are biased very often have a go at those who try to make decisions on an objective basis and sometimes get it wrong (referees) and those who try to analyse and comment on games on an objective basis and sometimes get it wrong ('pundits'). I think we all need to strive hard to be objective. Especially once games have finished. Blood boiling is not good for one's health. Plus, yesterday's game hardly had any impact on the outcome of our season (still less one yellow card decision over which many are fuming).

He didn't cover himself in glory but that's a freekick every day of the week. He looks at him, backs in, and makes no effort to go for the ball. Whether it's a foul or obstruction is debatable but it's a freekick either way.

Imagine the tears, followed by corruption posts, if that ‘foul’ goes against Delap and a goal for us. Takes half a step back into a 6’3” 15stone Palmer, who goes down like he’s been hit by a transit van. Surely you don’t take that gamble, and you make sure, first and foremost, that you claim/clear that ball? I’m sure ill be wrong tho.

I saw it that the striker stood his ground and Palmer bounced off him, he's entitled to look in any direction he choses. Of course every defender called for it, it's their job, that doesn't make it a foul. It's not fun to have a go at Palmer, which I'm not anyway, I'm saying he made a mistake which fortunately he got away with.

I'd fully expect it to be given against Delap, it's a freekick every single time. I doubt there'd be any tears if it happened at the other end, but I imagine you'd be on here calling it a blatant foul and saying everyone else is a wet wipe if they think it shouldn't have been given.

Standing your ground and impeding someone else from getting to the ball while not attempting to play the ball yourself and not having the ball within your control is the definition of obstruction, no?

I don't see it as impeding, the striker is in the six yard box anticipating a cross, should he move out of Palmer's way so he can just catch it comfortably?

While we are at it, why when defenders "watch the ball out" from the attacker is that allowed. Surely that should be obstruction too? Seems like some things get judged differently.

It's because they are deemed to have control of the ball, which they do as they can play it at any time, so they are just shielding it. When the ball is up in the air, nobody has control of it so if you are deliberately getting in the way and not challenging for it then it's obstruction.

He should probably make an effort to win the ball rather than just backing into and impeding the keeper. If he jumps for it with Palmer and Palmer flaps at it and it goes in then fair enough, but he's deliberately making a back for him.

Was he backing in? I've watched it back a few times and it looks more like Palmer just bounces off him, I found it baffling in real time. I'd have been far less angry had that been given rather than the penalty.

He does back in, imo. He takes a half step back and then makes a back for Palmer. He's not trying to challenge for the ball, he's just trying to impede Palmer. Think we both agree that Palmer needs to be stronger there, but for me it's an infringement and those get given more or less every time.
