Shout out for Palmer 19:26 - May 10 with 867 viewsSuffolkPunchFC

I’ve written about my frustration with Palmer in recent posts - not helping give us a threat.

Last game I saw the green-shoots of a different player, and today he was excellent with his feet, inviting the press and (mostly) comfortably with his feet (that one ball that went under his foot for a corner notwithstanding). At times he was also quick to release, be it a kick or a throw.

Very promising improvement.

I really don't get what people see in him. For me, he's a solid Championship keeper, no more, no less. His distribution errors today would've been jumped on if he was Muric. He's nowhere near as comfortable on the ball as Hladky is/was.

Morsy was visibly annoyed with him on multiple occasions and seemed to be coaching him through the game.

Aside from the one that went under his foot for the corner, there was another one where he seemed to be inviting the press then when it came he panicked and put it out for a throw.
Muric would have got pelters if he'd done it.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

I’ve been critical of Palmer on a number of occasions, as I don’t think he’s as good as Muric.

Credit where credit’s due though. Was he perfect / brilliant today. No, but it’s blinkered to say he hadn’t improved in the last couple of games. That is presumably coaching, and it is a promising sign for the future.

If Muric was in goal today and put in the same performance he'd have got dog's abuse from the crowd and there'd have been several threads on here during and after the game slagging him off.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

We have real problems if Palmer is the issue as he has the highest rating based on match ratings on this forum. If this is the case we will need to recruit 18 players in the Summer.

I could not agree with this more. Our fanbase completely astound me at times, as Muric was hammered for errors far less critical than many of those Palmer consistently makes in games. He is absolutely woeful at commanding his box (for his faults, Muric took a lot of pressure off us by how good he was at this) and with his feet he is absolutely diabolical - after his near howler against Wolves, he nearly did the same once again today. Not the answer for me.

He has been decent, but is iffy with the ball at his feet, and does not find players like Muric did when he goes long.

A keeper that goes for a few million in the January window is exactly that, a solid championship keeper. We had to save face a bit after Muric and weren’t going to be starting Walton all second half of the season, plus he had a knock.

We would obviously be back in the market if we go back up, should be ok for next season though.
