Eurovision, always nice to see.
Politically voting as always, meh.

General public consensus, death to all Brits. "0". Oof.

I'd be astonished if you could name 18 songs in the competition, let alone 18 better than ours. I think people like to knock Eurovision, and especially like to knock our entrants, and I think you're showing a bit of anti-bias because that song isn't your cup of tea. I'm trying to set subjectivity aside, even though it's not my type of music, and I believe pretty girls singing a catchy song would appeal to the general populace enough to get at least a point, regardless of what you or I think.

The proof is in the juries - experts in music/Eurovision - who awarded us a respectable 88 points. How do you explain that they gave us 88 and the general public gave us a big fat zero, without conceding something more is at play? It doesn't add up.

I'd say we did well a few years ago despite the political voting, but it still happens, every year, and has been going on for decades. To dismiss that it's a thing is very naiive.

Depending on the audience it may not be something I freely admit but I’m a Eurovision obsessive, I know all the songs, I’ve been to Sweden to watch their national selections. I know it’s a bit of kitschy fun for most people but I genuinely love it.

I thought our song was a bit crap, it’s my subjective opinion but that’s entirely what the televote captures- the subjective opinions of random members of the public. The jury may beg to differ and that’s fine because they’re the professionals. The song chimed with them, it did nothing for normal members of the public across Europe, myself included. For what it’s worth this is my ranking from last night:

1) Austria
2) Estonia
3) Albania
4) Finland
5) Iceland
6) Sweden
7) Spain
8) Latvia
9) France
10) San Marino
11) Denmark
12) Greece
13) Luxembourg
14) Germany
15) Ukraine
16) Norway
17) Poland
18) Armenia
19) Switzerland
20) UK
21) Norway
22) Malta
23) Lithuania
24) Italy
25) Portugal
26) Israel

San Marino, who finished bottom, you put 10 places above us?!

Anyway, we could debate this for hours and we wouldn't get anywhere. I can't remember the songs just from the country names, but I guarantee there are some boring dirges you've put above the UK.

As a Eurovision obsessive you'll know that there is political voting.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Just musical taste innit. Some people think the likes of Drake are good, I’d rather cut my own ears off with a rusty hacksaw than listen to him open his mouth but each to their own.

Political voting is 100% a thing but you can only politically vote for someone as Israel’s national broadcasters orchestrated this year and last, not against someone. It’s why they brought in jury voting, because the Eastern Bloc and the Scandinavians would just all vote for each other. But there isn’t a conspiracy against the UK to always give us 0. Switzerland got 0 too despite high jury scores. I think it’s a very UK-centric view to think that we’re the centre of our own universe so we must be the centre of everyone else’s too and the European public is just waiting for their moment each May when they can really stick it to us.

Just more often than not the song isn’t good enough to make the top 10 in most people’s opinions. Sam Ryder was good enough and he saw the rewards.

Anyway it doesn’t really matter, certainly not enough for Sun readers to get all upset about and start calling for boycotts etc.

Pound for pound, the UK is probably the greatest producer of music in the world. For the size of our country, the amount of world famous musical acts we've produced is probably second to none. I can't think of a more successful country. We should not be in the same realm as Switzerland. It's been nearly 40 years since we won this competition which is riduculed (and praised) for its naffness. Not only do we not win, most years we don't even come remotely close. Why is that? Have all our songs been terrible for nearly 40 years?

We could chuck Adele or Ed Sheeran in and we still wouldn't win.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

We just do not do naff Europop and the songs we have written to ape it always lack integrity.

Are you saying that normal Ukrainians are unhappy that we are supporting them to resist invasion and occupation by Russia?

I have to say, I know many and that could not be further from the truth for them.

You say you know a few, is that what they're telling you?

I know four Ukrainians from different parts of the country. A couple of them are totally in line with how the majority of us think about this war (they now live outside Ukraine, but clearly see their futures back in their home country), they are grateful for Britain's support against Russian "invasion and occupation" as you say it. The other two have different opinions. One of them is distinctly pro-Russian (though he wasn't always that way) and lives in the Donbas though he describes himself as Ukrainian. The other one sees the country very much as I do, a pawn in a wider conflict between Russia and the Russia-phobic West. I know her very well and she hates Russia but sees the UK as a big part of the problem in reducing her country to the state that it is.

I respect all of their positions and am grateful to them for giving me a more nuanced view of the situation than the one the majority of us hold here in Britain

That's interesting, thanks.

I know many more than that, and they all hold the same views. However, they are mostly refugees and mostly from the Sumy area so quite probably not a representative sample.

Why do you put 'invasion and occupation' in inverted commas? That's not a controversial statement surely?

I thought our entry was pretty good, i think they were trying to emulate a bit of a Queen style to it as well with the stops, starts and different styles throughout the song. Was it the best in the competition though ? I thought so but I also thought the German entry was great as well.

Unpopular as they are, there are arguments based on history that make some interpret the events differently.

If you take the invasion back to the events in 2014, when not a shot was fired, some argue that it was the most peaceful invasion in history. If we're talking about 2022, then that's clearly a different story. Occupation is also debated by some who point out that Russia didn't initially want to take the eastern parts of the country into Russia because they didn't want to upset the political balance of the country between a relatively equal split between pro-Russian and pro-Eurozone Ukrainians. Occupying the Donbas and making it Russian would mean that the Ukrainian government would always be strongly anti-Russian and they days of the democratically elected, pro-Russian Yanokovich would be over for ever.

My personal opinion on this shifts depending on which of my "friends" I'm speaking to as, understandably, it's a highly emotive and divisive topic in the country.
