Palace defensive display. Lessons to learn perhaps 09:45 - May 18 with 601 viewsGreenEye

One closing down the man with the ball and one covering his move. Simple, disciplined & effective. We've been too often one-on-one this season and been punished for it.

We saw their attack on the break being lethal as well.

A very well coached and well managed team. Would their first choice for manager have achieved what Glasner has?

I was there when McKenna's ITFC won in the Premier League at Home. Fewest home wins and equal most home defeats in a season in ITFC history.

I think when we're in a low block that is often how we try to close a man down. Many of the one v ones where our man has been beaten have been when we're in transition which has really hurt us. The increased athleticism of many of the Prem teams means they get more men back more quickly and can go back into the block.

Much as I like Leif, for the Prem we clearly need to be compact and counter attack

A left sided Axel is probably what we need, we don't control games well enough for Leif to be pushed so far up the pitch, it causes more problems than it solves

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

A slow midfield is where our problem lies. If it's not sorted during the next window we are in trouble. No I'm not having a go at Morsy but he is past his best and perhaps not good enough for the Premier League and will struggle to play in every game in the Championship. With Phillips, who has been a total waste of money and Cajuste probably moving on and Loungo also in need of replacement MA and KM have a job on their hands.
Palace had strong runners all over the pitch. Young athletic players who were also strong as well.
If Town are only essentially player one man upfield he needs immediate support when we attack and cover when we defend.

Yet again highlights the limits of our position and the average established premier league team. Definitely things to learn from but a huge gulf in class in reality.

3 of the back 5 play for England. Another a £20 million purchase from the first team of a decent established bundesliga team. Then a centre mid in Wharton now linked with Real Madrid! Without mentioning the other half of the team, Eze etc.

Undoubtedly some cracking buys and a good team put together, but that's much more possible when you have been in the prem for 12 seasons, soon to be 13.

As I said, we can learn from it, definitely, but you can't necessarily learn England international standard, or learn to attract the same players as you can if you have the kudos and ongoing cashflow of an established premier club.

Yeah and credit to them for sticking with him after their dreadful start. Other clubs might have pulled the trigger, but they gave him time and now reaped the rewards.
