Lineker leaving the beeb 13:14 - May 19 with 2487 viewsbsw72

Does it really deserve to get the headlines/coverage it is getting? Was all over Radio 5 this morning when I walked the dogs and I don't get it personally.

I'd say a more classic example of dehumanisation is the ethnic cleansing and genocide currently being carried out by the failed state of Isreal.
But clearly Linekers retweet is a bigger story

Why the smile? What’s funny about offensive antisemitism?

There’s 5000 threads about Israel Palestine, this one is specifically about Lineker and what he re-posted. It’s a current news story because he just left last night, has millions of followers and is the face of BBC sport. Are you suggesting there isn’t any coverage on the Middle East?

Unless of course antisemitism is fine or should be brushed on the carpet because of the current actions of the Israeli state?

A really good example of lumping in all Jewish people’s feeling due to what’s going on in the Middle East right now. Disgusting that people either excuse crap like this or say it shouldn’t be a story because of their position on the international situation over there.

I’ll just leave it there because I can clearly see where it’s going.

Feck me! Geta grip love.
Of course you'd rather not discuss the current genocide and would rather discuss the retweeting of a rat.

Well, oddly enough, it was lead item on BBC News this morning. The BBC is also crammed with advertisements and promotions for their own programmes.
It isn't "news" as such, but Lineker's celebrity status makes it so, particularly as he has become a divisive political figure.

Which he correctly apologised for - a cartoon rat that he hadn't clocked.

I don't think anyone seriously thinks Lineker is an antisemite or full of hatred of Jewish people.

A public figure who cares that there is a genocide going on has banished from the BBC for supporting Palestinian rights.

It was the historical context that was wrong about it. He should have been more careful. I’ve no sympathy there lm afraid.

I am guessing that at least 90% of the population would not have seen any significance in the rat either. Probably far more.

That’s beside the point - the rat was quite clearly visible on the tweet GL shared. If you reshare a tweet then you must take full responsibility for it - why is a rat depicted on information related to Zionism? If someone has no idea, instead of blinding sharing it he had a responsibility to do some research. A quick google and most people would’ve thought ‘that’s very dodgy, I’ll leave it’.

I don’t think for one second that GL is anti-Semitic and if he wasn’t leaving the BBC relatively shortly I do think that a heartfelt apology would have been sufficient.

Not buying it. The vast majority would not have given it a second thought, and I dont suppose he did either. He took responsibility when it was pointed out. Sincerely and immediately.

But no. He mistakenly copied something far from obvious without realising the signifciance that some say it holds.

GET HIM!

It was never about the rat anyway. It simply gave an excuse to those who've been gunning for him all these years.

Indeed. He keeps saying things that right wing types don't want said by someone who is popular. Surprised and disappointed in the BBC for succumbing to media pressure.

Hes entitled to a view. And has not said anything remotely unreasonable. It is absurd that people can be virtually lynched for what was obviously unintended and immediately acknowledged when raised.

I am certainly against any lynching, virtual or otherwise.

I do agree that the consequences are often immediate and excessive in cases like this.

And I've done no more really than call him naive.

I agree that his didn't intentionally say anything unreasonable. The rat emoji was as toxic as it gets but I accept that was done carelessly rather than intentionally.

If he weren't working for the Beeb, it would clearly be less of an issue. His right to a view is not the same as his right to publicise that view to over a million people when he's a presenter for an institution that is meant to be scrupulously neutral. The last thing I want is for us to end up with TV channels like they have in the States where you really can't trust any political news to be impartial. We've already had a creep in that direction in GB News.

And make no mistake, if things do go that way in this country, the views being expressed will be far more likely to be pro Israel and anti Palestine, whichever side of that story happens to float one's boat.

Oh dear.

Would be different if he posted misinformation, untruths, or hate speech. Or if he was a news journalist or even current affairs broadcaster.

He's not.

But GET HIM ANYWAY!

"Unless of course antisemitism is fine or should be brushed on the carpet because of the current actions of the Israeli state?"

I don't think anyone has said that anywhere 4J.

As you say, the thread is about GL. He's made a very dumb error and is paying the price for that. As outspoken as GL is, he has no form whatsoever for posting discriminatory content. I think most would attest the contrary is true.

In some ways I can see similarities in Danny Baker's demise. He was (and probably still is) a great broadcaster, but posted something really dumb without thinking. Like GL, absolutely zero form for posting discriminatory content, but was ushered out of the BBC quicker than you could say "Sausage sandwich game".

Like others have said, I also wasn't aware of the connotations of the rat emoji, so I'm pleased this issue has improved my knowledge.

Getting back on topic, I know GL divides opinion a bit, but I've always liked him as a media personality, going way back to "They think it's all over". He is certainly one of the best presenters on the TV and that is why the BBC have continually paid top dollar for him. You get what you pay for.

On reflection, it's probably right he's had to go, but whilst I might be in the minority, I'll miss him on the BBC.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

At half time of the Cup Final Micah Richards asked Wayne Rooney what he'd say to his team as a manager 1up against a "stronger" opponent, Lineker quipped immediately that Rooney wouldn't know as his teams were never 1 up at half time
Made me chuckle and fair play to Rooney he did too, at least on camera anyway.
